  Good documentary & Acrassicauda kicks ASS!!!

  A really great two-part documentary about Acrassicauda. It shows footage of them playing before a crowd plus some rehearsals. Mostly it is an interview with the band members about the toll the war has taken on their dreams of making it big. Eventually the bad re-settles in Syria, which is about as friendly to metal as Iraq was. I would even highly recommend this to those who have no interest in metal music because the documentary is very insightful. It makes you care about the subjects very much as individuals who don't want to let go of a dream.

  All these guys want to do is rock, grow their hair long and do their part for the metal brotherhood, but the only problem is they happen to live in war torn Iraq. This documentary captures the danger and peril people are going through over there, and it's really sad and scary. Great movie.

  Acrassicauda means 'black scorpion' in latin. It's also the name of the only heavy metal band in Iraq. Needless to say, heavy metal is frowned upon by the fundamentalist authorities, who see their music as a form of Western propaganda. The journey of filmmakers finding this controversial band allows the audience a very unique point of view into the Iraq War. The film is about the effect of the war on the ordinary working people of Iraq. People like you and I who might want to play the music they like, and raise families.
  
  They might not be the most talented metal band in the world, but unlike some American musicians who like to boast about how they'd "die for metal", this is one band that looks everyone dead in the eye and means it, and for that, they immediately earn the respect of the entire metal community, not to mention casual viewers worldwide.

  I like metal. I like documentaries. If the band was any good this would have been 4 or 5 stars. If the film makers were any good this would have been 4 or 5 stars. It's a good thing for the band and the film makers that human misery is so damn erotic. It doesn't hurt that Iraqi people have potty mouths - it ups the horny quotient by about fifty percent.

  Heavy Metal in Baghdad is about a non-political band being drowned in politics.
  
  Acrassicauda is the only heavy metal band in Iraq. Their concerts are few and far between and members carry a gun to get to their practice space. They are forced to keep their hair short to avoid being killed and headbanging is a criminal act. Their fans are loyal but decreasing as they die or join the mass exodus. Their only goal is to succeed as a heavy metal band...
  
  Even though the band is the subject of the documentary, they sometimes take a backseat to the tragedy of their situation and the generally horrendous conditions in Iraq. They speak candidly of the effects the U.S. occupation has had on their music and the declining quality of life in the country. Their anger fuels their music.
  
  The DVD special features almost compose another feature-length documentary, combining for 88-minutes of footage. The key extra is a 45-minute documentary that picks up where the feature film left off...
