November 17, 2008i love the fragile feeling of hope(?) or something like that it gives in the sea of absolute emptiness.

November 10, 2008Bob Harris is a middle-aged actor in Tokyo Japan endorsing a brand of Whiskey. Charlotte is a 24 year old graduate in Tokyo with her photographer husband. The two meet whilst staying in the same hotel, and over the course of a week develop a strangely unique and wonderful friendship. A quiet and contemplative picture 'Lost In Translation' is not going to appeal to everybody, but if you're patient, emotionally sedated and calm, it'll no doubt entertain you. Its odd mix of culture, misunderstanding and that mind-numbing feeling of being totally lost leads to a thought-provoking and relatively original plot premise. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are what really make the film worth watching. Whether they are on screen together or separately, speaking or in silence, they just seem to constantly be communicating with both each others characters and the audience. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and that is what seems to be the case with this film. Johansson can say absolutely everything with just one tear or sigh, and Murray can do the same with just a shrug or a flick of the eyes. Sofia Coppola's simplistic direction and quality choice of music make the film quite a unique and interesting experience. If you're looking for something to calm you after an evening of insomnia, this might just do the trick. Mesmerisingly calm.

November 9, 2008Bill Murrays best film!!!! the best love story ive ever seen, so real, true and possibly the best romantice comedy/drama ive ever seen. great soundtrack too.
-
November 4, 2008I feel it's overrated, but it's nice in a way. I certainly miss Tokyo lots as I was watching the film !

November 3, 2008Lost in Translation makes us FEEL. The characters (Bob Harris and Charlotte) are well-defined. The humor is subtle at its best, you've got to dig deep just to appreciate it. The sceneries of Tokyo are breathtaking, Sofia Coppola chose the right angles. Once you've attached yourself with any of the two characters, you'll find yourself bawling in the end like I did. Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson are equally awesome.
BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF SCENES which should not be included in the final cut because I really do not see their significance to the plot (most especially the golf and strip club scene). -
October 31, 2008it's unfeigned i think...no matter the performance, the feel, or the atmosphere...reality makes them always hard to express their real ieads when they are together, makes them can only say goodbye with a comfort kiss and hug at last, but this time is more natural, that's the good thing^_^
-
October 20, 2008Breathtaking shots, beautiful subtle acting in a gorgeously slow yet fluid tale of love and idleness. It may take a second rewatch for some people to really "get" it, you REALLY have to be in the mood for something like it in order to connect with it, but I've always adored it.
-
October 19, 2008Dos extraños se conocen en una ciudad que les es completamente ajena a ambos y conectan inmediatamente. Una historia de amor atípica sin dudas. Excelentes actuaciones de Murray y Johansson.
-
October 18, 2008Such a depressing movie. Not in my style at all. It had no point and wasn´t funny at all, just depressing. It felted like a waste of time. The only good here is the qute Scarlett. I think she´s a good actress and the only light here. The movie overall, no I didn´t understand it!
-
October 14, 2008This movie stole my heart and it just left me with the feeling that i could identify and even though it's a love or hate movie, all I know, is I loved it!
-
October 14, 2008Look up "overrated" in the dictionary and you're likely to find a picture of this cover art. You can only watch depressed people sitting in complete slience for so long...
-
October 7, 2008How in the world did this movie get over 80 4 star rave reviews and a best picture nomination? It just goes to show that all the movies these days are CRAP and if this is the best of the bunch, going to the movies is a waste of time.
1.) The movie had no point.
2.) I did NOT find it funny at all. Bill Murray is usually hilarious.
3.) The back of the movie did not warn me about the nude scene.
All in all, this movie sucked. I don't know why I spent 2 hours of my life watching it. -
October 6, 2008the movie was ok the problem was that the movie like didn't have a plot it just kept like the same throughout all of them movie but nice butt at the beggining hehe
-
October 3, 2008there is a hype 'bout sofia and this movie that i'll never understand. bill is pretty much cool, rly lonely, but scarlett is so over with that SUFFERIN-OH-I'M-ACTIN face.
-
October 2, 2008I've spent the last 3 years traveling nonstop for work. Since the summer of 2006, I've been spending a week a month in Singapore, and then a week in Taipei, and then back to San Francisco for the rest of the month.
This movie just resonates and I love watching it while I'm traveling. -
October 1, 2008Bill Murray has always been funny. and put him in a serious movie, he's still funny, Scarlett gives a great performance. this movie is good. saw it at an important part of my life.
-
September 28, 2008This movie was good, I enjoyed it. It's about an american man that goes to tokyo and ends up meetin an american girl along the way. They end up hanging out.
-
September 27, 2008Boring... Not my kind of drama, seeing Bill Murray's tired face makes me tired too with this movie. too overrated.
-
September 24, 2008very funny and great movie.i love this kinda movies.silence but loud in mind.but it hasnt got much surprises.
-
September 22, 2008I thought the film was very good. It was a film where you got an insight into the lives of two people and how their lives crossed paths.
It's a very intimate film, seeing how their relationship develops but perhaps the most powerful thing is not knowing how the story ends. -
September 19, 2008Everyone wants to be found, including me,but it haven't found me yet. Daughter of that legendary Francis Ford Coppola is good, just like his father. Sophia Coppola directed a simple but not boring drama about 2 people who met in their lost well. It entertain me enough.
I thought the cast are the good one. Stars Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as the main star is a nice choice. Bill Murray played well here, his performance as Bob Harris was 2 thumbs up. For Scarlett Johansson, her performance was a nice but average one, but frankly, she was very beautiful here. The others weren't that important to be discussed in my review, so I'm gonna skip them.
Move on to the rest of it. The story itself, wasn't a brilliant one, but Sofia Coppola successfully turn that simple movie into a brilliant artwork. The score, is a basic standard and adequate score for drama. It also has a nice cinematography.
I dunno what else to say but, I just wanna say (again) that this movie is a good one, for it wasn't drowsing me off nor dizzying me up. Alright, one thing, if you want to travel somewhere that need translation, make sure that you rent a good translator, otherwise you'll get lost.
Last things, BBC said that they successfully discover Bob's last word to Charlotte. It's "I love you. Don't forget to always tell the truth." -
September 11, 2008I liked this better the second time I saw it. I can appreciate it for what it is, but it's just not really my style. I liked the cinematography, the setting, and the humor for the most part, but I just thought parts of it dragged on....

September 11, 2008I'm kinda afraid of what I'm gonna say in a review like this. It feels a little bit like writing a love letter: there's little chance that I could possibly put into words why I like this movie so much and at the same time, there's a huge chance I come off sounding stupid and incoherent. So why bother? Honestly, I don't even know myself. But... oh well, here goes.
Art, as a general whole, tends to strive to show the human condition. To me, that seems to be a rule that carries through to all of the artistic mediums: movies, music, what have you. In particular, movies tend to show you a story, and the story has a morale that highlights a certain condition of being human. Then we can all relate to it, and if even we don't, we can still get something out of the experience, knowing that whatever was shown was very much a part of being a human being. And thus we're further enlightened.
That's one of the things that sets this movie apart. Other movies use stories, and at times, it feels very very apparent that you're watching a story unfold. That's not the case here. This movie is unique; it doesn't feel like a pre-written story at all. It feels as if we're placed smack dab in the middle of the lives of two very common people with very common problems. At no point in this movie does it feel like we're watching a pre-written story being acted out. Instead, we're simply experiencing life, as must be experienced by millions of people on this planet, by following these two people.
It's this uniqueness which sets this movie apart. Since it never feels like a "story", we approach it like we would approach things that happen in real life. You sympathize with both the characters of Charlotte and Bob. Even when certain things aren't said, you can tell what they're thinking, as if you were watching these events unfold with real people you knew in front of your eyes. You know why Bob is attracted to Charlotte, and vice versa. You know what they're thinking, and how they must be feeling. This goes on from scene to scene, and you see the gradual transformation, maturation and growth of each character. This creates a sense of connection that you simply can't feel if this movie was done any other way, because it personally feels like the life experience we've gone through ourselves.
By seeing everything in this manner do all the themes pop out at you. And wow, there are a lot of them: Everyone is confused about life. Everyone is unsure about growing up. Everyone is unsure of how content they really are about the way their lives have turned out. Life always feels a little odd as we proceed in it, as if we've been displaced from our native countries (by the way, that's a damn awesome metaphor).
I'm an Asian-American college kid from Southern California. Yet, the humanity shown in this movie was so universal that I could relate to two white Americans' experiences in Tokyo.
And that's where the appeal of this movie lies: we're all human, and we're all going through this funny little thing called life. It'd be nice to have a translation to it, but that Rosetta Stone probably won't be discovered. All of this, everything shown in this movie... this is exactly what being a human being is about. -
Belleza, hermosa, deliciosa... Bravo, Coppola!

September 8, 2008This movie gets better each time you see it. I can't really quite point out why the movie touched me.
Maybe because I like Bill Murray or maybe it's the movie that made me fall in love with Scarlett Johansson.
Maybe because it reminds me of my time in Japan 10 years ago (eg. frustrating coz of the lack of English labels in the subways, those over the top Japanese TV shows, Pachinkos, the whole atmosphere of Tokyo at night, etc).
Maybe because it's not a typical romantic film where the guy and girl meet, fall in love, make out, have sex and live happily ever after or something like that. It's more of a platonic relationship (I think that's the right word).
But what I do know is that I love this movie. -
September 7, 2008At first time I don't like it too much... but it is amazing. I can't stop watching! Great scenes about Japan.
-
September 7, 2008I love this movie so much. I didn't know what to expect from Murray in a role like this, but I l loved his performance. Scarlett Johansson also turned in a great performance. The movie unfolds like a love letter to Tokyo. Nothing is rushed, but rather than boring me, I found it refreshing. Coppola takes her time, allowing shots to linger, and pauses between dialogue.

September 4, 2008Hardest review ever. Lost In Translation could disappoint you if you watch it expecting the typical lovestory or a plot full of events. Basically, it's instead a slow but fascinating story of two persons feeling lost in a foreign country, starting a relationship of help and care. And this story is told in a delicious way. So, thumb up.

September 3, 2008''I just don't know what I'm supposed to be.''
''You'll figure that out. The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you. ''
A movie star with a sense of emptiness, and a neglected newlywed meet up as strangers in Tokyo, Japan and form an unlikely bond.
Scarlett Johansson: Charlotte
Bill Murray: Bob Harris
Lost In Translation examines and explores the intricate web of love, life and loneliness, the restricted nature, the incessant insomnia and the weird out of place feeling of being in an alien place, where you feel like you are the only one of you're kind. The loneliness that evolves from being in essence solitary. The enigmatic possibility of a dream that meeting someone will awaken lost emotions and unlock memories. This is what life is about and Lost In Translation shows us like a flower blooming, coating us with it's sensual pollen and messages.
The characters here are believable. Their dialog is deep. The setting is dreamy and breath taking. It's all tirelessly fascinating because we can all relate to the spaces on offer and it involves us in ways that most films don't.
We the audience find ourselves drawn to every moment these two kindred spirits experience, together and apart. We are mesmerized, hypnotized even, by the glances, nuances and words they share.
Sofia Coppola successfully juggles Bob and Charlotte in their separate lives at first, but when they do meet, it's something out of this world. They begin to adventure out into the chaos and endless possibilty of Tokyo, and Lost In Translation almost takes on a perspective altogether altered from it's previous state. We saw Bob Harris and Charlotte at their most private and vulnerable, their inward lonely selfs. While out on the town, the film seems to sit back and just let them have fun. Thank God, for Bill Murray's rousing rendition of Elvis Costello's "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a riot. During this period, it seems that Bob and Charlotte have forgotten their insomnia and loneliness, but as they say nothing lasts forever. Even during their night on the town, we see moments where they sit silently, motionless and still some what confused. Lost In Translation is a comedy in some sense, but it escalates into a pervading tragic feel of seperation. At one point, Charlotte says to Bob: "Let's never come back here again, because it will never be as much fun."
The movie takes a while to truly glean out the deep-seated motivations of both of its characters, but they become fully-realized in a marvelous scene where Bob and Charlotte lay fully-clothed in bed together. Here, they handle the bigger questions in life's game, and not "Where did you go to uni?" or "What did you want to be when you were small?" but "What is my purpose?" and "Does marraige get easier?". I was intrigued at the sheer honesty of the character's answers. Bob relates to Charlotte the experience of having children and the ongoing struggles of being married, but a tinge of fear and apprehension runs through his speech. Charlotte hasn't really figured things out for herself at present, she says she's tried just about everything but hasn't found that doorway to venture through.
Coppola's screenplay takes these two separate beings, far apart in age and experiences, and makes a profound statement, both are in the same exact emotional limbo, and unending cycle. Charlotte is confused and worried, but Bob is regretful and washed-up. In a way, these two as said earlier are kindred spirits, two flames destined to meet. That is the heart and pumping blood of Sofia Coppola's vision.
I couldn't finish my review without saying or putting something about another star behind the scenes of Lost In Translation, that is nearly as effective to the film as Director/Screenwriter Sophia Coppola. That is cinematographer Lance Acord. He has worked on Coppola's husband's (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze) films before, but this is his finest, most beautiful work yet. He captures Japan, and the film's characters, with such a soft albeit colourfully sensual and abstract flare that it's nearly inexplicable to describe. I often wondered why, beyond the fact that they have so much to think about, Bob and Charlotte, are seen staring out windows so much. If they see Tokyo with the same resolute clarity that Lost In Translation perceives, they have no better reason to.
It has great comedic flair with Murray's wonderful work, but it's also perhaps one of the saddest and most moving films I've seen Murray ever do also.
It's a form of a romance but it's not in the form of when they'll kiss or when they'll make love (one kiss on the cheek becomes unbearably mind blowing in ways that transcend to love proportions). It also has that Affair to Remember vibe too, where the journey of two souls that find comfort will eventually have to come to an end. Its finish though, defies categorization, as does the rest of Lost In Translation. Many times during the film's quaint, quietly moving finale, I expected lush music to start playing to underscore the escalating sadness of the film. Fortunately it doesn't do this to us. Coppola simply lets her two amazing leads do all the necessary work. When the film does arrive at its final, ambiguous moment, it all just seems perfect.
The catchy Japan pop soundtrack that runs brilliantly throughout the film begins to play, and I find myself with a huge regret, that being that I won't be able to savor the subtle chemistry of Bob and Charlotte anymore, but content with the taste of a masterpiece still residing in my mind.
Some things do get Lost In Translation, but sometimes words aren't the only thing that require translating, sometimes your heart can be the hardest translation of all and finding yourself can be even harder. -
August 29, 2008Borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring! Sorry. Didn't like it. Didn't see what all the fuss was about. I thought it was pretentious and droll.
-

August 24, 2008What is the big deal with this movie? I saw it and liked it but people made such a big deal when it came out. Plus it was nominated for 5 oscars? I dont think it should have been nominated for anything.
-
August 24, 2008The first time I watched this it was pretty lame.. Now I get the meaning of it (: Really cute story.!! And I love the cast.
-
August 14, 2008One of Sofia's better works. I love the scenes of everyday Japanese life in terms of karaoke bars, temples, and the bustling nightlife of the city.
-
August 10, 2008Outstanding - This must be the greatest love story since Romeo + Juliet. It's subtle, it's understated and the casting is inspired. Bill Murray is perfect as the disillusioned actor and I simply fell in love with Scarlett Johansson. Factor in those glorious shots of Tokyo and we have an instant classic on our hands...
-
August 10, 2008The best movie to ever capture loneliness and everything that comes with it, a breathtaking and beautiful masterpiece about the mood and states of these two characters lost in the journey of life. Classic!
-
August 7, 2008Bill Murray in a dramatic role? If you've seen groundhog day, scrooged, or any of his other movies you know comedy is more his fortay but he still manages to shine in this film.
-
August 5, 2008Really touching, the kind of film that makes you believe in friendship... but you can see where it is going right from the start, its very predictable.
-
August 4, 2008I do not understand why this movie got such "rave reviews" it's crap, absolute crap! Bill Murray quite frankly sucks in anything besides commedy, there's not a whole lot of story, not much delivery and I found myself having to force myself to pay attention to it because I'd pretty much rather be doing ANYTHING than watching this garbage!
-
August 3, 2008Going cross streets, you can see many people there, you shouldn't feel lonely. But how many do you know? Maybe most of them are strangers to you. In a morden city, we don't lose anything for living. But sometimes we are in lost emotionally.
I watched "Lost in Translation" last night, I feel the same from it. Mightbe the kind of case happened to me, so I feel it specially. It is special meaning to me. I found I lost something in my mind. I feel I am lost today. I am keep thinking should I meet him again or not. I am very conflicting. I am sure he is a passing traveller in my life, I don't need to pay more attention on him, because it never works out.
So it is the time to forget it. It is the best solution to everybody. Let me save some nice memory forever. -
August 2, 2008some might say it's a god movie but...honestly...i don't find it quite entertaining...well whatever hahaha
-
July 28, 2008O que salva é a fotografia e a atuação dos dois atores principais. A história é incrivelmente chata e cansativa.
-
July 27, 2008Bill Murray is spectacular in this movie. It's unfortunate that it happened to come out in a year full of astounding movies, there should be some kind of overall career Oscar. Oh yeah, Sofia Coppola did a good job on the script and directing as well.
-
July 26, 2008I'm still angry Bill Murray didn't win best actor. (Stupid Sean Penn.) Also, why didn't this get best picture instead of the third Lord of the Rings movie? Maybe because they were awarding the trilogy? (Stupid Academy.)
-
July 24, 2008It is a nice movie in all aspects, but it was incredibly boring. However it did have its moments, especially when they met some of the Japanese teenagers...
-
July 18, 2008To me this is an absolutely perfect film. I have watched it many times and I am always able to take something new away from it. Murray and Johansson are perfect in their roles. Coppola's story and directing are beautiful. The soundtrack is also amazing with great music from My Bloody Valentine, Kevin Shields and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Hands down my favorite movie of all time.
-
July 17, 2008Brilliant movie. One of the best movies I have ever seen. Murray and Johannson are perfect and the storytelling by Sofia Coppola is spot on. We just want more from this movie!!!!
-
July 17, 2008An interesting movie, languorous in its approach, though many times some scenes just felt really random and out of place.
-
July 16, 2008Lost In Translation
Delicious! Even better than The Virgin Suicides. Making films for Sophia Coppola is like writing audio visual poetry.

DIRECTED BY: Sofia Coppola
STARRING: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Faris, Catherine LambertSynopsis
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is an American film actor, far past his prime. He visits Tokyo to appear in commercials, and he meets Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), the young wife of a visiting photographer. Bored and weary, Bob and Charlotte make ideal if improbable traveling companions. Charlotte is looking for "her place in life," and Bob is tolerating a mediocre stateside marriage. Both separately and together,
they live the experience of the American in Tokyo. Bob and Charlotte suffer both confusion and hilarity due to the cultural and language differences between themselves and the Japanese. As the relationship between Bob and Charlotte deepens, they come to the realization that their visits to Japan, and one another, must soon end.Source: IMDbMy Review
Lost in Translation is a movie a bout cry, laughter, loneliness, and how to be LOST IN TRANSLATION. Some called it boring, some called it, well, how should I say this? That the apple didn't fall so far from the tree. Coppolas really had a thing to direct. And that women have power to direct a good movie, and also a non-chick-flick-Nancy Meyers. What makes it so good?
Nothing but simply the CLOSER look on life, and how it goes, actually. How a man in his midlife crisis and a woman who simply regretted for he path she's chosen for her. And it easily touches the viewers. Bill Murray played Bob Harris beautifully, one of the best of his long career. The character Bob will never be the same with another actor to play the role, I'm not saying it's irreplaceable, but it will be DIFFERENT. But who's the lucky girl here? Scarlett Johansson. Well, it's not exactly lucky, she deserves what she gets after the Charlotte role. A Hollywood dream, became an A-list actress, she deserves it all, after this. She made the Charlotte's character was so true and we will be easily understand her character without convincing ourselves, 'Well, this is a movie, it didn't really happen, so don't give a shit about the non-sense character state of condition.' Lost in Translation is a movie where we can see the pureness of acting by Johansson.
The script was PERFECTLY written, the jet-lag state will never be more beautiful as it had been shown by the movie. This is one of those movies which got the true to life dialogs and somehow, we can find smartness in there somewhere. The score is terrific, the Japanese view is catchy, but not as great as the movie itself. And if you remember any of Anna Faris' part, ah, let's forget that. She leaves this movie a little scratch, but, no one can totally harm the movie.
In the end, Lost in Translation is not only a movie about a guy in someone's country who lost in translation of the people, the language, and gesture, but a breathtaking movie about how to be lost in translating life and how to find the perfect person in our downfalls. The famous whisper end of this movie will always be the best ending for this beautiful story of friendship and connection of two people. And about what the whisper says, WELL, LET'S KEEP OUR CURIOUSITY FOREVER.
Can you keep a secret? I'm trying to organize a prison break. I'm looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar, then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out?
-Bill Murray as Bob Harris- -
July 10, 2008ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES! I CANNOT PUT INTO WORDS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MOVIE IT ROCKED! IT HAS BASICALLY NO STORY LINE BUT THE ACTING IS SO GREAT I MEAN DAMN JUST WATCH IT AND SEE!
-
July 10, 2008This movie should have been called "Lost on the Cutting Room Floor."
The only thing worth looking at is Scarlett Johansson. -
July 9, 2008I love the way the film makers showed how the characters were feeling about their lifes, by showing them 'lost' with the language barrier. I heard that you either love or hate this film and i definitely loved it. Excellent film.
-
July 7, 2008Saw it for the third time yesterday and it still works. Bill Murray makes his career performance. He truly shows the audience that he can act.
Ok, there are some issues that are clichés like the japanese 'r' turning into 'l' etc but Murray saves that what could actually be totally lame.
Is it a comedy or a romantic film. It's a blend of both in a perfect way. -
June 30, 2008it is a good film and its ending is great.murray and johansson shine in this movie.especially bill murray.
-
June 27, 2008Perhaps one of the most sweetest films i've ever seen!
It's slow but it really does this relationship between two people beautifully. -
June 24, 2008Outstanding - This must be the greatest love story since Romeo + Juliet. Subtle and understated, the casting is inspired. Bill Murray is perfect as a disillusioned actor and I simply fell in love with Scarlett Johansson. Factor in those glorious shots of Tokyo and we have an instant classic on our hands...
-
June 24, 2008An interesting look at what it would be like to go to Japan. The two leads are great but the pace of the film is a little bit slow for my tastes. If you are interested in seeing a bit of life in Tokyo however, this film is worth watching (23.6.08)
-
June 23, 2008This movie so HORRIBLE! It has the worst story ever and it is SOOOOO slow I can't finish it every time I try to, I just can't it's so boring.
-
June 22, 2008I don't know if I'm just not cool enough or what it is, but I found this movie WAY overrated. I love Bill Murray like everyone else but come on. Scarlett Johanssen annoys the shit out of me even though I'd diddle the daylights out of her. I can kind of see what the goal was here, but I think it missed by a mile. And if you think I'm full of it, ask anyone who loves this movie to tell you why. You'll find them not making any sense and jumping from this random thought to that random thought just like the movie does. I guess I'm not hip or cool enough to like, get that totally secretive meaning, man. "You mean you couldn't tell what he said at the end? Wow, you are so lame dude." F-off.

June 21, 2008"Charlotte: 25 years. That's uh, well it's impressive..
Bob: Well you figure, you sleep one-third of your life, that knocks out eight years of marriage right there. So you're, y'know, down to 16 in change. You know you're just a teenager, at marriage, you can drive it but there's still the occasional accident."
It's been a long time since a movie has made me hurt the way this one did.
First of all,I have to say I wasn't that much of a Sofia Coppola fan, because I didn't liked the way she acted in Godfather Part III and I thought Virgin Suicides sucked. But this brought whole new impression about her to me.This idea was so original and brilliant. And the cast was wisely chosen, just a potential that can expected from F.F Coppola's daughter.Superficially, Lost in Translation is a movie about culture shock. The film explores these themes against the background of the modern Japanese cityscape.Bill Murray was at his best in this movie.Classic comedy actor really showed his talent and it even recognised in Academy Awards. It's his best performance of his career.Scarlett Johansson in this movie with her strong performance and got her credit (BAFTA won and Golden Globe nomination).I never expected her to be this good.it boosted her career as an actor.
The plot was Aging movie star Bob Harris (Bill Murray) has arrived in Tokyo to film a Suntory whisky advert and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is the young wife of a celebrity photographer on assignment in Tokyo. Left behind by her husband when he goes to his photo shoots, she is unsure of her present and her future and about the man she has married. Bob's relationship with his wife of 25 years is clearly tired and lacking in romance, as revealed in his telephone calls back to the US. Bob and Charlotte, both lonely and directionless, meet in the bar of the hotel where they are both staying and strike up a friendship. The two explore Tokyo together, experiencing the differences between Japanese and American culture. The two grow close through their adventures and the time they spend together when neither can sleep.
On the penultimate night of his stay, Bob attracts the attention of the resident vocalist of the hotel bar. The next morning, Bob awakens to find this woman in his room and Charlotte waiting for him. The pair have a brief conflict when they later meet at a restaurant, seemingly over Bob's sleeping with this other woman. Later that night, during a fire alarm, they reconcile and express how they will miss each other.
On the morning of his departure, as Bob is in his taxi to the airport, he sees Charlotte on a crowded street. He asks his driver to stop, gets out, and pursues Charlotte. When he reaches her, the two face each other for a long moment and then embrace. Bob whispers something in the tearful Charlotte's ear, kisses her, and then departs. The movie ends leaving a completely ambiguous answer to the question of whether their relationship will continue.
In the film's final scene, Bob whispers something to Charlotte and kisses her, actions that were not in the script. The actors and Sofia Coppola have refused to disclose in interviews what Bob says. Some fans and professionals (such as the BBC) have attempted to decipher the quote, but there is no consensus on what is said.
This movie deserves every Award nominations and winnings. -

June 18, 2008It was enjoyable. Pretty linear nothing to really make you jump off your seat but I can appreciate the relationship between Johansson's and Murray's character.
Worth a watch. -
June 16, 2008The first time I saw this movie, I didn't understand it, but I had this feeling that I had just been witness to something special. Anybody who has experienced love, insomnia, loneliness and uncertainty about their future and the choices that they've made, should love this film. It examines many human fears and doubts and comes out at the other end feeling bittersweet, but refreshing.

June 15, 2008One of Bill Murray's finest movies. He was robbed at the Academy Awards, he should of had it in the bag!
