"night of the living dead" is a horror film that is a sure classic horror zombie film and is one of romero's best films next to 1982's creepshow "they're coming to get you barbra" "you kill the brain you have killed the ghoul".

Considered to be one of the best zombie movies of all time, this classic movie by George Romero is set in a house in which 7 occupants barricade themselves inside whilst a horde of the living dead try to smash their way in to eat their flesh. I wouldn't say it's very scary at all and the gore is too little but it's still a fascinating movie for it's time. I think I'll stick to the modern day zombie movies.

Actually pretty good for the time. It was more funny than scary, but it was still good despite that stupid hooker face, Barbara.

This was actually pretty creepy for being an older movie in black and white! Perhaps because as an old movie, it seemed to drag on longer, that it actually got more intense... as if you were inside the home listening to the moaning slowly approaching with them! I had to watch a lighter movie to get to bed afterwards! :P

Classic Romero. To me this is the very film that put zombie horror in a genre of its own. Without even a whisper of the word zombie.
I will admit, the acting is not all that brilliant and Judith O'Dea's reaction in the begining almost brought me to laughter induced tears. However, this can be overlooked. Romero has created a timeless classic that carries you on an exciting journey until the very end. One of those films that stick in your mind forever.
"They're coming to get you Barbara."

December 2, 2009
Its a classic of course, and pretty much started the zombie genre. With a small budget, Romero did a great job at it. Though I will say that there is some really bad cimetagraphy and some horrible music/sound effects throughout the film. Acting is actually good considering the talents that Romero had to work with. If you have not seen this film then you should just as an historical look into cheap film making if nothing else.

Here's another one I saw at the drive-in when I was a kid. The movie was so scary, I was terrified to sit near the window for fear these creatures would reach in and grab me. LOL!

November 17, 2009
I think this movie is still so creepy after it came out is that it spares no expense to be brutal. It's like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre where it's not necessarily the most extreme violence, but it's very real. The real paranoia, however, lies in the people trying to protect themselves. It set up the entire modern age of horror by showcasing everything lovable about the genre.

For its time this movie stood out as being one of the creepiest and goriest. Now its nothin more than an old horro. Still it has some great scenes and some pretty intense scenarios

The acting is not really good and the story is a little repetitive, but what makes this creepy film work is the tense, disturbing atmosphere and the terrifying ending.

Night Of The Living Dead has the best opening setup for a horror film, ever! It sets the mood perfectly. Its a full on assault of the senses. The cast is brilliantly played by virtual unknowns...at the time. Judith O'Dea is amazing to watch go from calm to hysterical to full blown basket case over the course of the film.
What can be said about this film that hasnt already been said. Its a perfect film from start to finish. Horror doesnt get much better than this and neither does film for that matter. One of my all time favorite i can watch over and over and never get sick of. The perfect horror film! -

A brother and sister get more than they bargain for when they visit the grave of their father. It was a wreath, a simple wreath to place on the grave. Another person wondering the cemetary turns out to be a biter, not the vampire kind.
The brother tries helping his sister to ward off this attacker, but poor Johnny hits his head on a gravestone knocking himself out. Now they're really coming to get Barbara. She holds up in an empty farmhouse until luckily somebody shows up to help her.
The zombies are constant and are drawn to the house like moth to a flame. When more people emerge from the downstairs cellar, they try to help. When a plan to fuel up a truck fails, all hope is almost lost. If only a group of people with shotguns and torches would show up to help these people.
As each member of the house is slowly picked off (no pun intended) only one survives. He sees a band of gun toting rednecks while looking out the window, picking off zombies. He's saved! (Gun shot hits the guy in the head). Damn! Well, he was almost saved.
A classic, of course. -

This horror classic is so old-fashioned it shows dominating males and screaming dumb females. So typical those times when a woman was incapable of doing anything, it seemed.
Due to the black & white screen and the low quality the so-called scary zombies didn't scare me at all, they were just laughable.
I felt bad about the protagonist's fate, played by the late Duane Jones. His last scene was a good one.
But no, NOT a recommendation for Halloween! -

What an appropriate day to revisit this classic zombie film, although I probably should have waited until night falls. The fears I remembered from seeing it long ago still stand. If you haven't seen this classic, AMC is doing a marathon this evening. Don't watch it alone.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Director: George A. Romero
Country: United States of America
Genre: Horror / Sci-Fi / Thriller
Length: 96 minutes

A brother and a sister visit their grandfather's grave in the countryside just to be attacked by a pale-faced man who is acting pretty strangely, so she takes refuge in an old farmhouse where she meets a man who protects her and himself.
George A. Romero became a horror icon back in the 60's since he directed Night of the Living Dead. "Why", you ask? Because George A. Romero managed to redefine the moden horror genre concerning zombie films.
What makes Night of the Living Dead a timeless masterpiece of horror is the fact that it completely changed what we considered "scary", "violent" and "gory". Whereas films had focused on giant monsters/bugs attacking cities, serial killers and legendary horror characters such as Dracula and Frankenstein, Night of the Living Dead was the first film that gave a full meaning to the term "zombie".
First of all, the Black-and-White filming style works perfectly. Although some things didn't make sense to me, like being 8 o'clock and still light and then the sun going down too fast, I really can't complain about anything. Night of the Living Dead is one of the best made independent and low budget films. In fact, its low budget didn't seem to matter at all. A genius in horror doesn't need a big budget in order to create a masterpice.
The pace is superb and the film itself is beautifully gory for its times, containing some scenes of cannibalism and a beautiful stabbing. Most of the film takes place at night, at an isolated farmhouse totally surrounded by dead people whose brains were reanimated possibly by the radiation emmited by the explosion of a satellite sent to Venus and that need to eat flesh so they can survive. Ain't that wicked?! What else can you ask for?
The film would influence tons of horror directors in the future. The original line of sequels also directed by George A. Romero are Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007) and ... of the Dead (2009) (?), which has been declared to be the last entry in the zombie series by Romero. Despite this, several directors, most of them Italian like Lucio Fulci, made their own line of unofficial sequels since the best entry in the series, Dawn of the Dead was released worldwide.
Overall, although it ain't the best part of the whole series for me, Night of the Living Dead is one of the best classic horror films ever made that established a style used even nowadays in zombie films. Obviously, no zombie film will ever be a true contender for this masterpiece. Its setting, its horror, its concept, its eerie music, its "jump" scenes, its make-up, its zombies, its direction and the way this film caused HORROR make of this film a horror masterpiece and the second best film of Romero.

THIS is considered a classic? WOW. This one belongs high on the list of most overated movies of all time. After all these years, I finally watched this film, and it was still too soon.
There is NOTING scary about this film. The zombies just looked like old people shuffling around on the lawn. Is this supposed to be a comedy? There is no menace, no terror, no tension.... just a whole lot of bad acting, bad camerawork, bad FX makeup, bad music... If I didn't know better, I'd say it was meant as a spoof of horror films.
People bash horror films, especially most modern horror films. But I will say that even the worst one made in the past ten years looks like an Oscar winner compared to this. And don't give me those lines about "it was the first" or "it was groundbreaking at the time." Just because something had to be the first, doesn't excuse it for being horrible.
....and oh yeah, I'll take modern day fast zombies over these laughable "zombie shuffle" ones any day. -

Nothings better I think than a horror film in black and white, everything looks real and horrifying. Casting a black man in the lead role and having him play the only level headed person in the room I bet must have opened some eyes and left some empty seats...course every movie is left with empty seats.

The original "scary movie"...simple, but entertaining.

October 6, 2009
So much has been written about this now classic film that it's impossible to imagine any new insight, so I'll just share what I enjoy about it. Utilizing a single claustrophobic setting for most of running time, NOLTD has a documentary like quality that gives it a horrifying sense of realism comparable to Orson Welles' infamous WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast. Regarded as the grandfather of the modern zombie film, NOLTD transformed the zombie from the human afflicted by a voodoo trance into the flesh eating undead.
It looks so perfect that it makes me wonder why black and white isn't used much for horror any more. When directors copy Night of the Living Dead they copy the zombies and the arguments, rather than things worth copying like cinematography and theme. Many horror movies exist solely to scare the audience. Night of the Living Dead differs because it uses horror to make interesting social commentary.

This is one of the most affecting horrors I have ever seen. Romero's ability to go into the human psyche and play on the fears that reside therein is astounding.
It's been quite a time since I saw this last, but even thinking about it is making my poor heart race and my palms sweat with absolute terror. God! This movie is brilliant! It's also, probably, the most influential ever made. -
October 4, 2009
This flick made zombie horror what it is today. A classic in all sense of the word. It was also the first time that a black man played a lead role in a well known movie. It rocks and will always be better than the remakes!!!!

October 1, 2009
Truly the first, and one might argue, the best of it's kind, and the perfect review to kick off October. George Romero invented the Zombie genre (in film anyway). Sure zombies were used in movies previous to this, but for the most part, they were nothing except mindless drones serving the whims of some evil master. It wasn't until "Night" that they became the ravenous hordes of flesh eating humanity that we all know and love. Not to mention the underlying social commentary that has become a staple in Romero's "Dead" films. It offers such a bleak vision, not just in terms of it's plot, but also in terms of mankind's inability to cooperate. And let's not forget the ever present racial tension that was hinted at but never shoved in your face. But what it really comes down to is that this is a kick ass horror movie. It has been imitated countless times, but never matched. The greatest thing about this movie is that it was made by a bunch of friends who didn't really expect what they got. They were doing it more for the love of scaring people (and maybe getting them to think a little) than for the paycheck. Those are the people who make the horror films that stick in your mind like a blood soaked rag sticks to the wall.
