"A youthful, impulsive sexual encounter opens the door to a dark comedy about the complexities of honesty."
An impulsive sexual encounter from her past haunts Amy, an otherwise seemingly normal young woman with a bright future and nice-guy fiancé. But her fiancé has suggested that the couple be completely honest and tell each other everything! When Amy finally relents, encouraged to tell the truth by her coworker and mother (neither of whom really knows what she has to disclose), and reveals her secret, all hell breaks loose.
Review
Sleeping Dogs" is a sweet little indie romantic comedy about what happens to a nice girl when she admits to her fiancé that she once gave her pet dog a blow job.
Yes. You did read that correctly. The nice girl in this movie admits to giving her pet dog a blow job. She performed oral sex on a canine or, if you prefer, she blew the pooch.
I thought that "Sleeping Dogs" was just wonderful. Black and mortifying and awful and funny. Black comedy cut from the same cloth as the Todd Solondz movies "Happiness" and "Storytelling". Yes, "Sleeping Dogs" is a little rough around the edges (the lack of budget shows), but the performances are spot on and the script (dealing with serious questions about secrecy and honesty and how much somebody really needs to know about you before it starts to hurt them) is a little gem.
The comedian Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed "Sleeping Dogs". He was that loony Zed in some of the "Police Academy" films. Who'd have thought he could make such a good movie? And it is a good film. It's very good. Go and see it. -

Pulled punches hurt this film, but it has a good heart and good acting. Plus the situation, which could have descended into low grade humor, it is dealt with in a relatively serious manner

Tackles an interesting question. Should you tell your lover/fiancé absolutely every little secret about your past? I enjoyed the film; sometimes a white lie might be necessary.

For the first half i was sitting there thinking "noooooo why did she suck off that dog" and then by the end i was depressed because of how the whole thing with her parents turned out. One thing its learnt me is to check what the film is about before i rent it!

The characters are really unbelievable in this movie. I just don't believe for example the parents would react the way that they do. The ending of the movie was better then expected.

this film for me just don't know what it wants to be. it swings from one type of film to another just like a pendulum of a clock. it starts out with her sucking off a dog so i thought u know might be a dirty porno type film but then goes right off into a love story but then has a few jokes then the mom dies so it just don't know what it wants to be. and for the film its self its kinda boring it just drags and drags. but as there is a few jokes they save the film from a 1* but its not going to see my dvd player again...

People are really hard on this movie. Granted it is definitely NOT for everyone but it is a good film about honesty and its place in relationships. It has a very unusual premise in it. It is written and directed by bobcat goldthwait so there you go. If you like bobcat and appreciate his bizarre point of view i think you will like this movie.

It was okay I suppose. I wouldn't rent it again that's for sure. I guess the whole meaning of the movie is DON'T EVER TELL YOUR LOVER YOUR MOST PRIVITE OF SECRETS or else.

Stupid stupid movie. Waste of time.
-
August 14, 2007
Kind of twisted comedy to start with, but then turning into an almost thoughtful drama. Addresses the important question of how honest should you be in a relationship. Very funny performances from some less well known actors made this much more bearable than it could have been. An odd film, and definitely NOT one for the whole family!

funny parts- ended up being more of a dramedy- would recommend to my crazy freaky friends-careful- there is some gross out factor
-

C'mon, she sucked off a dog. Thats worth about three stars in itself.
-
August 5, 2007
Friends, you're not gonna believe what this film is about. Twisted, twisted stuff. If you can get past that, it's a pretty interesting watch. Personally, I think they should have made "the big secret" something else. Anything else.

sooo down-to-earth... brutally honest.. it's a reminder that we should not only embrace the ideal but also the wide range of realities and possibilities.. the start of the story kept me thinking and interested on the rest of it. good. good.
