August 28, 2008Whooo Hooo,I can scratch this off the list now. This was a cool flick,I Sooooo love Jeff Bridges' or should I say 'Dude's' character. He was so funny so laid back.Dressed the way I wish I could dresss every day, shit talk about being comfy and not giving a dam what people think.I loved it,If you haven't seen this yet you should.=)

August 21, 2008Il film che porterei con me ovunque. Trama esilarante, dialoghi ipnotici, comicità surreale. Lo rivedrei ancora mille volte. 10+ alle performance della coppia Bridges-Goodman, davvero stupefacenti.
-
August 21, 2008A comedy that is difficult to understand because of its insane plot. The Coens wanted to tribute Ray Chandler with a labyrinth-like story that doesn't really go anywhere. Jeff Bridges is perfect as the stoner who just wants his rug back.
-
August 20, 2008There's nothing to be said that hasn't already been heard, or read, an infinite number of times. This film is absolute, hands down, unbeatable, brilliant, comedic perfection.
Writing so good it's painful - this is afterall one of the most constantly quoted & celebrated movies (few films have their own "Fest".) And it's equipped with some of the most beloved, well-crafted characters in cinematic history.
With such gorgeous cinematography, it made bowling beautiful - it made a slacker a timeless hero, it gave movie-lovers a reason to party.
And like a countless number of other fans, I catch something new every time I see it... and It continues to make me laugh, while astounding me even more with every viewing. -
August 18, 2008Un film délirant. Les rebondissements farfelus succèdent aux scènes hallucinantes et désopilantes, le tout porté par des personnages farfelus.
-
August 17, 2008This is cult in its purest shape. The music, the dialogues, the screenplay, the cast and the costues are brillient. A must-see!
-
August 17, 2008So much potty-mouthed fun! Jeff Bridges was awesome as Jeff "The Dude" Lebowski who only really wanted to be compensated for his rug. After all, it really tied the room together. John Goodman was brilliant, too! Such a crazy, crazy man. And Donny, you'll really feel sorry for Donny played by Steve Buscemi. I found the story to be very entertaining, primarily due to Jeff Bridges, who seemed made for the role, and John Goodman. A must-see.
-
August 13, 2008I think this might get funnier every time I see it. The humor is subtle, and it really grows on you.
-
August 13, 2008la mejor comedia de los Coen, con dialogos bizarros, situaciones comicas, humor negro y tal vez, una de las mejores actuaciones de Bridges.
-
August 12, 2008A film I cannot become tired of. The most quotable film I've ever seen. Genius.
"I hate the fucken Eagles, man!" -
August 10, 2008It's a character-driven movie. Fortunately, the characters and writing are outstanding and hilarious. How can you not love the misadventures of The Dude and Walter Sobchak? Genius.
-
August 7, 2008Just watched this movie for the first time in a while, if you havent seen this one yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? one of the Coen Brothers' best movies.. well besides Fargo lol
-
August 1, 2008I know I will be hated for this. I don't know what the hype is all about. I liked the characters, but the story meandered.
-
-
July 25, 2008the problem with film noir is an american problem: we want everything simple...just like the teevee---and movies--- tell us to want. simple desires, simple motives, simple answers, even simple movie reviews. the coens burlesque that childlike wish and allow their actors to run loose in this ever-so-obvious send-up of american fantasies. look for julianne moore's hilarious kate hepburn impression.
-
July 22, 2008One-Sentence Review:
"This is a comedy that works in all aspects"
(Sometimes you have a comedy that's funny, but the writing's terrible and the talented cast is pretty much the only asset that keeps it moving. This movie not only has a great cast, but it's wonderfully written (by those genius Coen Brothers), lavishly directed and contains a remarkable soundtrack. Each and every character has a quirky, notable personality.Ethan and Joel Coen have a great sense of originality.) -
July 22, 2008The Dude has got to be one of cinemas' greatest characters. I love this film, exceeded expectations. The dialogue between the characters especially John Goodman and Jeff Bridges are brilliant, far better than most scripts, With Bridges and Goodman really making the characters hilarious without cheap lines. Great comedy with good cast.
-
July 20, 2008Not at all the funniest movie I've ever seen, but it has an intricate and interesting plot in spite of its rather low-budget and farcical outer appearance. A good movie.
-
July 20, 2008Make the f-word into an art. Still, didn't like it quite as much as I was hoping as I really enjoy every other Coen brothers' film. It does grown on you, though.
-
July 18, 2008Not the Coens' best, but pretty good. I didn't like Jeff Bridges or his character, but I thought the subversion of the noir genre was kinda interesting.
-
July 18, 2008Dude watch this movie, its one of the best comedies around & also makes bowling even more fun. All charecters are different yet all seem to be perfect for the film. A MUST SEE !!!
-
July 14, 2008Ah, the Coen Bros are awesome. So much swearing, but geez, I can't remember laughing so hard as when Walter relates everything to Vietnam.
-
July 11, 2008The Big Lebowski is one of the Coen Brother's great movies. The script is incredibly original, unique, and pretty funny. Both Jeff Bridges and John Goodman do a great job; but it's the supporting cast that really outshines them. This movie is a must see for all comedy fans!
-
July 10, 2008A Coen Brothers Classic, released in 1998. Jeff Bridges and John Goodman have great performances. They breathed life into their characters, and had me laughing so hard I couldn't stop.
Its hard to believe that the Academy didn't give this flick one single nomination. Not one...can I get a "bullshit" from my fellow Flixter friends? -
July 8, 2008Dude, Duder, El Duderino. That rug really tied the room together.
Great actors, clever script. Jeff Bridges was brilliant and John Goodman, what can I say lol. The Coen take a silly, pointless movie and make it freakin cool as usual. -
July 6, 2008I loved the script, I loved the direction, and I loved John Goodman. Jeff Bridges, however, probably played his character too well in that I couldn't really sympathize with him. All in all though, its an enjoyable quirky film.
-
July 6, 2008Another great Coen brother's movie with the same style they always make them. Its not the best but still in a very high level. Great story and characters makes it really entertaning to watch. John Goodman had a great role in this one. Steve Buscemi's role are kinda weak but fairly good along with Stormare in smaller role. Coen's fan shouldnt miss this one so pick up this flick and enjoy..
-
July 6, 2008This may be more than a 3 its been so long. when i watch it again I will upate my rating. I love his response to the guys dunking his head in the toilet.
-
June 30, 2008It seems like only a handfull of people get something out of this. It is a strong indication of the sorry state of the world. But that's just like my opinion.
-
June 27, 2008"Barton Fink" was a film about Hollywood, and this is one about Los Angeles, and they both have John Goodman. Great performances, direction, and writing. The Coen brothers at there best here.
It's the story of a burn-out bowler named "The Dude", whose precious rug "which ties the room together", is peed on by a group of thugs, which sends him on an odyssey to fatherhood, death, Facism, suite cases full of money, and of course freindship.
And besides Steve Buscemi get's created at "Sunken City", a place from my home town in San Pedro, overlooking the Pacific. Perfection. -
June 27, 2008It's a rare occasion when the Coen brothers make an unremarkable film, and The Big Lebowski is certainly no exception. Although not on the same level of greatness as the Coen's top work like No Country For Old Men or Fargo, The Big Lebowski is probably their finest comic venture. It's a completley ridiculous foul-mouthed tongue-and-cheek roller-coaster of a film with top-rate performances. In an electrifying and extremely memorable performance, Jeff Bridges plays the Dude or Jeffrey Lebowski. He's your average unemployed loser who spends his days drinking and bowling with his best friend Walter (a superb John Goodman), a wise foul-mouthed Vietnam war veteran with serious anger issues. When The Dude accidentally gets mistaken for the Big Lebowski (or a rich old man with the same name) by violent thugs whom the old man owes money to, the Dude unintentionally gets involved in a kidnapping scheme involving cynical Russian nihilists, the Big Lebowski, the Big Lebowski's trashy trophy wife (of course played by Tara Reid) and Julianne Moore who plays the Lebowski's ultra-neurotic daughter.
Like I said before it's a compeltley ridiculous movie but it's indescribably hilarious and also quite clever. There are many scenes where I was rolling on the floor laughing like when Goodman's character destroys an automobile while yelling,"THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU F--K A STRANGER IN THE ASS!" The performances are all great with Bridges and Goodman stealing the film in their own ways. Julianne Moore is spectacular as always and the film is filled to the brim with wonderfully played bit parts from Philip Seymour Hoffman, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Sam Elliot and of course John Turturro in a small but very memorable role as Jesus the Arrogant Mexican Bowler who's also a sex offender. The Big Lebowski won't appeal to all tastes because of it's striking peculiarity, but if you dig the Coens as much as I do I highly recommend this soon-to-be cult classic. Grade: B+ -
June 26, 2008Such an oddball caper but Jeff Bridges does an excellent job in the lead. The storyline is strange but very entertaining. Great supporting cast!
-
June 22, 2008Kind of funny, but it really isn't that hilarious of a movie. Why does everyone like it?
The only good part is when the dude gets hit in the head with that coffee mug. -
June 21, 2008weird but good weird..... big thank you to my special freind, you know who you are, DUDE.....a real star...thanx for the card + good wishes...xx
-
-
June 11, 2008funny! jeff bridges as "the dude" - what a brilliant casting! john goodman as "walter"? his best role, EVER! "hey, man! there's a beverage here!"
-
June 9, 2008this is an incredible movie... have watched it many times, jeff bridges was incredible, and john goodman, well he is one of my favorites.
-
June 9, 2008a cool movie...Goodman's role and performace lead the way...goofy but very funny at times....enjoyable if you are into this type of humor..
-
June 6, 2008Seems worse than other Coen projects, but the funny and unnecessarily complicated plot work well enough to call this movie 'good.'
-
June 2, 2008One of The Coen Brothers Unsung masterpiece. Bridges is awesome as the Dude and Goodman is great as a Vietname Vet who likes to throw that in your face alot. Great Coen writting as well as comedic timing that only Coen Fans could understand.
-
June 1, 2008amazing. Another classic film from the Coens. There's so much to like about this movie- the great acting, the wacky, weird, lovable, off-beat characters, and equally out there and very memorable/quotable dialogue, the flashy and trippy style and editing, and overall just how damn hilarious, uplifting, and brilliant all of it is.
-
May 28, 2008''That's a great plan, Walter. That's fuckin' ingenious, if I understand it correctly. It's a Swiss fuckin' watch.''
Dude Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire Lebowski, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.
Jeff Bridges: Jeffrey Lebowski - The Dude
John Goodman: Walter Sobchak
Lebowski like Fargo is another smash from the Coen's. Revolving round unique characters and a crazy plot that defies belief. Bowling and the Coen's fascination with money are at it's heart. TBL basks in it's originality and crazy roots.
Jeff Bridges plays The Dude like a pro completely different in a role that tests his acting capabilities. John Goodman totally different in looks and character from anything I've seen him do. He's got raw aggression and often makes things worse but hilarious nonetheless. Steve Buscemi & John Turturro have smaller roles but nonetheless performances memorable. I mean Jesus and his rants, not to mention a ball polishing scene that had me laughing and uttering WTF??!!
From toilet flushing to black humour to dreamy sequences and squabbles that are over nothing it will create a riot of laughter, everything in The Big Lebowski screams to my humour and sates it.
I can understand why many won't like it but who cares personal taste conquers for me, and I'm going to say Lebowski earns it's cult status and I'd watch again and still pick up new ideas from it's confines.
Lebowski is a masterpiece yet again from the Coens who maybe are becoming favourite Directors/writers to me... -
May 24, 2008wow what a cracking movie...ive seen this 4 the 1st time n think its great..this is 1 of my favourite movies ever...this has a good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie...i think that both jeff bridges n john goodman were exellent as the title rolez 4 this movie..tara reid is beauitful n brilliant as always..flea was great because he is an exellent bass player n his band the red hot chili peppers are 1 of my favourite bands of all time..this is a great movie 2 watch because its really funny.
-
May 17, 2008Hilarius, and such an underated film!
The dialogue was amazing, very natural.
The acting was superb, and despite the humour being rediculous at times, at other times the humur was indeed clever.
The characters were extreemly likeable, the plot outcome was the type which would make you go "Ha!...oh! XD" I loved it, the camera angels, cuts and imagery were extreemly well done (I adore the Coen brothers! :'])
So don't bother judging this untill you've seen it, I'm tired of heaing "OH IT'S TOO STUPID" It's really not, it's original - it didnt have that stupid generic comedy movie atmosphear that alot of american comedy movies have (I'm sorry to complain but some examples would be American Pie/Scary Movie/Knocked Up), the ending was actually pretty heart warming, and it was just very entertaining throughout the whole movie.
I love it. -
May 13, 2008Another great flick by the Coens. They have shown they can do anything they set their minds to. This is a pretty funny movie. Jeff Bridges is great as The Dude. He's so laid back you just wish you can be like him. Walter is also great, John Goodman on his game here. Some great lines from him being "You are entering a world of pain" and "You see what happens when you fuck another man in the ass?!". The Jesus is also another great character. John Turturro is so underrated. It really is just a solid film. This dude abides.
-
May 7, 2008Mark it zero! No don't, this is a great film with great characters and a great cast. You'll be quoting this one at the bowling alley for days.
-
May 1, 2008Whooo Hooo,I can scratch this off the list now. This was a cool flick,I Sooooo love Jeff Bridges' or should I say 'Dude's' character. He was so funny so laid back.Dressed the way I wish I could dresss every day, shit talk about being comfy and not giving a dam what people think.I loved it,If you haven't seen this yet you should.=)
-
April 26, 2008One of the Coen's only films that I liked... this one has a logical reason for weird characters... drugs and bowling!
-
April 25, 2008Funny movie with memorable characters and scenes. The story is very original itself, the script very well written (as usual for the Coen brothers), very good song choices, excellent cast, and of course the beauty of the direction by the Coen brothers!
-
April 25, 2008Los hermanos Coen no se superan a si mismo porque es muy dificil pero hacen las delicias de todos sus fans con esta ácida comedia negra con personajes memorables
-
April 21, 2008One of The Coens true highlights (of which there are many), this film may not be completely believeable and a bit over the top at times, but it's a lot of fun to watch and is certainly one of the most quoteable movies out there. John Goodman steals the movie as a military vet who can turn any situation into something to do with Vietnam.
-
April 20, 2008The best movie made by the Coen brothers and one of the funniest movies I have seen.
great story with a lot of memorable characters and wicked scenes. -
April 20, 2008Jeff Bridges is in top form and you can never go wrong with John Goodman and Steve Buscemi. The Coens do a great job on all areas.
-
April 19, 2008Funny as hell, with a great soundtrack and great performances. But there are some useless characters in this movie, like Jesus or Donny.
-
April 18, 2008Sooo funny. About how a total loser's life gets destroyed due to a misunderstanding, but how he totally rolls with the punches. Great film.
-
April 16, 2008ah, não sei mto bem o q dizer desse filme... ele é legal de assistir... não vai mudar sua vida como parece que vai no inicio... mas é interessante...
-
April 14, 2008One of the most hilarious and original movie ever made, John Goodman is the fuckin God in this one, The Big Lebowski only gets better on repeat viewings. One of the finest movies by the Coens and its all about a fuckin RUG. Required viewing'S'.
-
April 13, 2008Sherry in 'Logjammin': [on video] You must be here to fix the cable.
Maude Lebowski: Lord. You can imagine where it goes from here.
The Dude: He fixes the cable?
Maude Lebowski: Don't be fatuous, Jeffrey.
What can one say about Lebowski. It is pretty much my favorite comedy of all time. Each character is so off the wall hilarious and act as if they are apart of their own movie.
Maude Lebowski: What do you do for recreation?
The Dude: Oh, the usual. I bowl. Drive around. The occasional acid flashback.
The Dude, Jeff Bridges, is styled in the way of a fan of Easy Rider, who never did anything but model his life as a 60s slacker.
Walter Sobchak: This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass!
Walter, John Goodman, is stuck in Vietnam, and needs to make sure everyone knows that, by referencing it whenever he can.
Donny: His name's Lebowski? That's your name, Dude!
Donnie, Steve Buscemi, comes from some sort of twilight zone, and is given the task of never being allowed context of a conversation, a big opposite of his previous characters.
Donny: Phone's ringing, Dude.
The Dude: Thank you, Donny.
Then you have the rest of the supporting cast, including Sam Elliot as the narrator, John Turturo as the Jesus (who no one fucks with), David Huddleston as the real Lebowski, Phillip Seymour Hoffman as his assistant, Tara Reid in her only good movie, and Julianne Moore as an artist of sorts.
Blond Treehorn Thug: [holding up a bowling ball] What the fuck is this?
The Dude: Obviously you're not a golfer.
The plot, which is needlessly very involved, revolves around a case of mistaken identity, where The Dude, whose real name is Jeffrey Lebowski, has him home invaded by some thugs, thinking he is another Lebowski, resulting in his rug getting pissed on.
The Dude: That rug really tied the room together.
The Dude is obviously upset with this, so he visits the real Lebowski to hopefully be reimbursed in some way. This results in the Dude's involvement in handling the kidnapping of the real Lebowski's trophy wife.
Walter Sobchak: You want a toe? I can get you a toe, believe me. There are ways, Dude. You don't wanna know about it, believe me.
The Dude: Yeah, but Walter...
Walter Sobchak: Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish. These fucking amateurs...
Amidst this strange plot the Dude must deal with an upcoming bowling tournament, his friend Walter, nihilists, getting a new rug, and hopefully dealing with all the strange people he keeps running into.
The Dude: What's in the fuckin' carrier?
Walter Sobchak: Huh? Oh, that's Cynthia's dog. I think it's a Pomeranian. I can't leave him home alone or he eats the furniture. I'm watching him while Cynthia and Marty Ackerman are in Hawaii.
The Dude: You brought the fuckin' Pomeranian bowling?
Walter Sobchak: What do you mean brought it bowling, Dude? I didn't rent it shoes. I'm not buying it a fucking beer. He's not taking your fucking turn, Dude.
The Dude: Man, if my fuckin' ex-wife asked me to take care of her fuckin' dog while she and her boyfriend went to Honolulu I'd tell her to go fuck herself.
Everything here is funny. Every scene leads to another strange situation. The plot is so ridiculously complicated at points that just the idea of these characters dealing with it becomes funny. And nothing is wrong with this, it is consistently hilarious.
Walter Sobchak: Those rich fucks! This whole fucking thing... I did not watch my buddies die face down in the muck so that this fucking strumpet...
The Dude: I don't see any connection to Vietnam, Walter.
Walter Sobchak: Well, there isn't a literal connection, Dude.
The Dude: Walter, face it, there isn't any connection.
It is an effortlessly funny movie, filled with quotable Coen dialog and plenty of bizarre scenes and characters.
The Stranger: There's just one thing, Dude.
The Dude: And what's that?
The Stranger: Do you have to use so many cuss words?
The Dude: What the fuck you talking about?
The Stranger: Okay, Dude. Have it your way. -
April 13, 2008I wasn't a big fan when I first saw it, but repeated viewings and the realization that it's a Coen version of a Raymond Chandler story made me love it. I might be going against the grain here, but I also believe it to be the high point of Tara Reid's career.
-
April 7, 2008A really great comedy with STEVE BUSCEMI, also one of my nicknames is The Dude so I like it even more.
-
April 6, 2008Quite a tale indeed. A uniquely hilarious story, The Big Lebowski is like a intelligent, stylish version of a seemingly dumb comedy plot.
Somehow, everything comes together really well and forms a solid comedy that doesn't cease to entertain or hold your attention. One of the few comedies I can easily watch over and over. -
April 4, 2008Funny, funny, funny. Mostly due to its brilliant characters and its wonderfully surreal moments. Oh, and Jeff Bridges.
-
April 3, 2008Very very quotable. We can all relate to being dragged into the world when we'd rather just be having a nice sit down...or an acid flash back! haha.
Let me share with you my favourite line in the entire movie...
Thug: [holding up a bowling ball] What the fu*k is this?
The Dude: Obviously you're not a golfer. -
April 1, 2008What can you say about Lebowski?, one of those films again which just has great dialogue and brilliant performances from Jeff Bridges and John Goodman....I prefer the Coen's comedies to their 'serious' films. Hope after they've finished basking in the glory of the Oscar for 'No Country For Old Men' they make a comedy again...
-
March 30, 2008At long last, I can finally scratch this movie off my "Ashamed I've Never Seen It" list. Not sure how I missed it for so long, though I think my Princess Bride experience had something to do with it. (After everyone in the world tells me how wonderful a film is, I usually find myself reluctant to see it, because I'm invariably disappointed.) Happily, though, The Big Lebowski is quite a good film, overflowing with the Coens' typical dry, subtle wit. (The DVD even includes a special five-minute phony introduction on how the film was "painstakingly restored" from a rare Italian 35mm print.) Glad to finally put this one behind me. Long live The Dude!
-
March 30, 2008I didn't like this movie the first time I watched it, actually. But for some reason, it's grown on me a whole lot.
-
March 28, 2008as a film, it's life as fleeting images and the dude as our humanity caught in its path, idiosyncratic and completely unique, this is truly a film thats reaches out to people of every kind, a buddy film like no other
-
March 26, 2008My favorite Coen Bros. flick. One of the most quotable films ever... and simply a knockout of a movie.
-
March 25, 2008a ridiculous, crazy story, that somehow all ties together. the more you watch it the better it gets. trust me ive seen it a million times
-
March 24, 2008This film has some great characters and wonderful dialogue. All the characters are very memorable and quirky. The dialogue is funny and very humorous. The one thing the film lacks is a conclusion or any resolution to the story. Whether you feel the story is about the Dude, the kidnapping that never was, or even the rug the ending isn't quiet there. As a collection of funny scenes this film is very good. The Big Lebowski also has wonderful mad cap characters that populate its world; the lack of anything to tie them all together in the end is the one real disappointment.
-
March 24, 2008Very cool movie of the Coen brothers, not as funny as i expected, but still super good, awesome movie!!!
-
March 18, 2008Joel and Ethan Coen strike yet again with a hilarious dark and witty comedy about major misunderstandings, pay-back and being in the wrong place and the wrong time.
-
March 15, 2008what a cult classic. J. Moore was lovely. And what can we say about the Dude-- hope he can get a new carpet
-
March 14, 2008Humor negro al por mayor cortesía de los hermanos Cohen. Bridges, Buscemi y Goodman están geniales en esta historia de perdedores bolichistas. Chingona.
-
March 12, 2008Jeff Bridges is The Dude, and it's hard to imagine anyone in the role. Someone else would've come off as just a pot-smoking hippie with some funny lines.
Roger Deakins, the cinematographer, is a craftsman of unsurpassed skill and an artist with an amazing capacity to transform the mundane (like um, bowling) into something truly beautiful to behold.
The plot is an afterthought and is more about the journey than the destination.
-
March 12, 2008THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998)
directed by Joel Coen

After a guy is mistaken for a rich dude he loses his favorite carpet and decides to go see the other Lebowski to recover his rug. This movie involves pornography, bowling, kidnapping, Viet-Na
