What would turn out if "Quiz Show" and "Dead poets society" could be mixed together ? The answer is: "The Emperor's Club".
Although the first half is full of cliches, is quite enjoyable, the interaction between Hirsch and Kline works really well, but later in the movie, when actors shift places, the spark is lost, along with my interest.
Kevin Kline is good as the professor, but I've seen this part played better by lesser actors.
A movie suited for a lazy sunday. -

Interesting and entretaining, with a cool scholar context (yay for roman history!), yet falls too easily into clichés, familiar characters, and a predictable story. It's still entretaining, gives good examples of values and anti values, the right and wrong, but doesn't gives anything extra to the teacher-student relationships films to support the main story.

Mi spiace ma di Dead poets society ce n'è già uno. E non uno a caso.

This movie was SO boring. I watched it because my people Jesse Eisenberg, Paul Dano, and Emile Hirsch were in it. I like Kevin Kline enough, too. Regardless, this movie sucked in the worst way - it was pointless and uninteresting. The best part about it, other than seeing Paul Dano pre-voice drop, was all the classical references. I always enjoy those, even though they make me feel stupid. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this movie unless you have a ton of time to kill and want to see Emile Hirsch play a total, poorly developed jerkface. If you like movies about boys' prep schools with lots of classical references, may I recommend the more recent and far more entertaining The History Boys? That movie features tons of singing and gay boys, including Dominc Cooper, the biggest lusty sleazeball in recent (British) cinematic history!

Like a nothing but full of something.. i loves Kevin Kline. Good story.
Teacher and parents have to work together for building good children.
The desperation of Kevin Kline in the movie is a very sad story. Watch yourself are we good or bad.. think of good things they tought you.. have we reach that yet. oh yes they will never know how are you now? but sure that good teachers never forget their student.. do we forget them? -

A very wholehearted movie and it certainly is not easy to like it. Kevin Kline gives great performance and it is a shame that this peformance of his has virtually went unseen. The rest of the cast however is not very good I must say. It is no match for Dead Poets Society or The History Boys for example. The antagonistic character of a rascalish schoolboy giving Kline a hard time is painstakingly unbelievable and created without subtance and serves as mere reflector for the protagonists development as he faces his retirment and/or rectorship. Still, it is an enjoyable movie and highly recommend for fans of the neat sub genre that is classic-education movies that smell of pine.
And the score is by Newton-Howard, and it is a good one indeed. -

es como la de R. Williams, la sociedad de los poetas muertos, que por cierto la presté y jamás me la devolvieron ... que rabia

June 7, 2008
Very disappointed, especially since this film is compared so heavily to Dead Poets Society. I love Kline to pieces, but his character is not as charismatic as John Keating (Williams), and I hated how the story revolved around one flat, dry character, rather than flourishing with five or six different stories. All right, but not the best. Could have lived well enough without ever seeing it.

THE EMPEROR'S CLUB
How far would a teacher go to guide a lost sheep to its rightful path? At to what extent should a teacher tread the dangerous path of having a close relationship with a very headstrong and spoiled student? Professor William Hundert's (Kevin Kline) principles and will is challenged with the disruptive entrance of the unruly and hard-headed Senator's son, Sedgewick Bell. Seeing potential in him, Hundert thrives to find ways to get through to Bell but his decisions will have devastating ramifications that will haunt him for a quarter of century later.
Maybe it's not Dead Poets Society, but it's unconventional plot and anti-climactic one at that serves a powerful lesson. Just like Dead Poets Society, it shows the resilience and value of the educator and their priceless contribution unacknowledged by mankind. Yes, like Kline's character I am a teacher in my own way, just a teacher, but I'm proud of that. -

this is really an ethics learning class all by itself!! and it just wills it's themes into your life what do you do when no one is watching do you want anyone to know what is it what you do or no the make some changes and become a transparent person!!

it always feels good to watch this kind of movies, the kinds of dead poets society, from time to time.

this is a great moral teaching film, and the characters are real esp. the fact that Sedgewick did not change his attitude as he grew older, it shows that not everyone will turn out to be the best person at heart. not only does it teach it's audience but it also has it's humourous sides esp. when we see the students of st.benedicts as kids, i thought jesse eisenbergs character was the funniest and he did it so well, all of the actors we're great. Kevin Kline did another outstanding job, and at first i found his character a but annoying but i soon realised it was because i found him uptight and Kline played him so well that you didn't feel the need to love the character or sympathize with him.
