Sin City COMIC/CARTOON MOVIE VERSION
Title Sin City Sin City
Date of Release First published April 1991 April 1, 2005
Creators Frank Miller Directed by Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez
Genre Serialized comic books Live-action “neo noir” thriller
Story Several interconnected “yarns,” as their creator dubs them, play out at once, as the citizens of crime-ridden Basin City (aka Sin City) struggle to survive. Rodriguez and Miller focused on four yarns for the movie. In one, Marv (Rourke) fights for the attentions of Goldie (King) and against his nemesis Kevin (Elijah Wood).
Characters No sole hero. A city’s worth of characters, including kind-hearted bruiser Marv; kind-hearted stripper Nancy Callahan; ex-cop Det. John Hartigan; twin prostitutes Goldy and Wendie; and good-mannered heavy Manute. Plus many, many more. none
Stars none
Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Michael Clarke Duncan, Brittany Murphy, Clive Owen, Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood
Dialogue Hard-boiled, a la Mickey Spillane. Same as the books.
Aesthetic Inspired by film noirs, Sin City is a shadowy world of vice and struggle. Rodriguez and Miller aimed to “translate, not adapt” the comics to the screen, and often mirrored the books frame for frame.
Ambiance A little bit seedy, a little bit sexy. Same here.
Audience More high-brow than Marvel superheroes attract. A respectable hit at $74 million in North American receipts and acclaim for the look and faithful adaptation. Two sequels are in the works.
Cool Factor Extremely high Extremely high
Cheese Factor Nada Low, though some performances overdid the tough guyness, and the director's insistence on sticking to the panels as storyboards creates some weird moments (such as when Marv is shot and falls unconscious).
Adaptation Accuracy
Defines “faithful”
Better or Bastardization? The book’s always better, right? A respectful creation, very true to the comics, often recreating specific frames from the comic almost exactly.
