The Buzz:

Plot:
Trading pot for therapy sessions? Sounds like a depressed teen’s dream. So goes the deal between young dealer Luke (Peck) and his shrink, Dr. Squires (a barely recognizable Kingsley). Set in New York City during the summer of 1994, when Mayor Rudy Giuliani was starting his urban scrub, the budding friendship helps both chums cope with a series of emotional messes. A drug flick with depth?

See Instead Of:
Adam Sandler as a hairdresser in You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. That’s just wacky, this is The Wackness.

Sleeper Potential:
Perhaps too dramatic to appeal to vacationing teens.

Popcorn Alternative:
Pass the Doritos, dude.

Indie Extras:

  • Supporting cast includes such intriguing oddballs as Method Man and Mary-Kate Olsen.
  • Won the Audience Award for Dramatic Film at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
Nineties soundtrack features “Summertime” by Will Smith—er, make that Fresh Prince—and Wu-Tang Clan’s “Tearz.”
