| Adaptation Accuracy | The violence of the book is faithfully retained in the movie, but the book has many gritty sexual elements that were left out of the film. The book portrays British society as having an ugly sexual underbelly and a brutal streak. More than one woman in the book uses her body to escape a difficult situation or merely survive. Evy herself is a prostitute when the book opens. | While the film is definitely the "Cliff's Notes" version of the amazing book, the filmmakers have done quite well, sticking to the main principles and aesthetics of the book, remaining as faithful as they could. |
| Better or Bastardization? | | Certainly not better than the book, but certainly not a bastardization either. It's worth noting that the book was written pre-911 while the film was made post-911. It's surprising that a post-911 audience could cheer a protagonist who blows up public buildings, but to the Wachowskis' credit they did not squirm their way around that issue and re-shape the story. |
