Cook began directing television dramas in the early '50s and met with success directing his first theatrical feature, Patterns, in 1956. He made quirky comedies such as A Big Hand for the Little Lady and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. In the '70s he shifted his attention to television.
