Fantastic movie, the continuous rolling shots adds an anxiousness and suspense which immerses you into the story. The length of these shots make the film seem a little long

It still wasn't entirely satisfying to me. The story is essentially about delivering a message, which is fine; not every film needs a complex plot. However, it shouldn't drag on too much and should maintain a quicker pace, offering consistently engaging visuals. The repeated sight of stapled corpses becomes dull after a while. My main gripe with the movie was the excessive reliance on coincidences. Firstly, the Germans meticulously clean up after themselves but conveniently leave behind one cow and a single milk bucket. This leads to the protagonist stumbling upon the exact house with a baby in need of that milk. Then there's the rat that conveniently triggers the trap just as our heroes are present. The arrival of the plane, landing right at the feet of our protagonists, and their decision to aid the German soldier (for unclear reasons) ultimately results in Blake's demise. Despite these flaws, the movie was visually stunning and a treat for the eyes. However, the abundance of issues prevented it from truly shining in my eyes.

1917 is the most accurate representation that exists, from the soldiers' point of view.

Hollywood gave us some incredible WWII films over the years. One could argue that "Saving Private Ryan" set the bar, and the tradition was continued with HBO's "Band of Brothers" and more recently Apple TV+'s "Masters of the Air." Yet we didn't have a lot of WWI films that reached that level of cinematic mastery -- until 2019, when "1917" exploded on the screen. I honestly couldn't tell where the long tracking shot ended and the CGI began, and that's high praise. Instead, I got wrapped up in the character's quest, against a terrifying backdrop of burned out cities and devastated countryside. My only quibble is that this might the be the most egregious example of "the bad guys always miss" syndrome since the original Star Wars, but I'm willing to let that go. "All Quiet on the Western Front" flipped the 1917 narrative and showed us the horrors of war from the German POV, and if anything it's even more powerful. Two absolutely great films that bring WWI to a modern audience. (#443 in my "watch all Best Picture Nominees" bucket list)

In one continuous take, we see the horrors of the great war among the bullet casings of the battlefield! Two soldiers are tasked with reporting an upcoming invasion to their allies across the scorched setting, which forces the two soldiers to partake on a hazardous and dangerous journey. Uninterrupted by scene changes, we are forced to take in every last detail of the destruction surrounding them as they make a desperate attempt to make it before the invasion!
