Alien: Romulus

I thought this was awesome... Yes, it plays the hits, but in a slightly different key. It's different enough for me to have had fun.

Every possible ingredient has surely been used, every angle exhausted. Major props, then, to Fede Álvarez for cooking up something fresh in this furiously exciting, gnarly seventh entry. He’s even found the eggs, too.

You can see the gears turning in every scene, and feel the film dutifully avoiding, well, alienation, the unknown, the discomfiting.

An engaging, generic horror/sci-fi/thriller. That’s an observation. Not an accomplishment.

The film boasts some rock solid Alien scares and Cailee Spaeny & David Jonsson make for a winning lead combo, but Alien: Romulus caves under franchise connectivity pressure.

It's not perfect, to be sure, but unlike a majority of the films after Aliens, it's one made with more dedication behind it, and with a clear passion for the series itself. It's a ride worth taking.

Even with all the effort put into the filmmaking and performances, the lack of surprise holds back what could've been a potentially outstanding Alien film, and restricts it to merely okay territory.

There’s nothing like an Alien film with practical effects. But the film feels like a checklist of cliché Alien and Prometheus moments, which is incredibly disheartening.

Alien Romulus is a strong return to the franchise, with homages to the 1979 original and a punchy third act.

Strong performances all around and a good entry point for new fans to the series.
