Attack on Finland

In the context of the present day, it all weighs a little bit more. Plus, it's a pretty good action movie, too.

This is nothing like the absorbing Nordic noir of modern Scandinavian television and cinema. It more resembles good old-fashioned American mediocrity.

The film is largely a missed opportunity that fails to live up to any feats of reinvention or wonder in its genre.

Despite the slow pace of the beginning, and a reliance on action movie cliches in both characters and action, the movie does go in some unexpected directions.

It’s ambitious and dense, a tad too long, but offers an insider’s look at the body politic of northern Europe.

Attack on Finland is a picture worth analyzing, and in bits and pieces worth savoring. But the film is too duty-bound to Remes’ book.

Despite abundant artillery, terrorists disguised as caterers, military strategizing, and filthy rich people in imminent danger, Attack on Finland achieves the level of a dry espionage drama with only a few surprises to elevate it from the mundane.

Louhimies’ film does not attempt to reinvent the action wheel, so Attack on Finland is simply content to be a solid action-thriller. Sometimes, that is all you need.
