Beasts Clawing at Straws

An arch, multi-strand, multi-character three-ring circus...

"Beasts Clawing at Straws" is obvious in its influences - a little Coen Brothers here, a little Tarantino there, all seasoned with a sprinkling of Hitchcock paranoia - but Yong-hoon manages to give them his own twist.

It's a wicked, twist-filled winner.

"Beasts Clawing at Straws" could just as well be called "Beasts Toying with Clichés" if it weren't such an amusing, echt Korean romp.

This almost Coen-sian tale of ordinary folks undone by greed is a lot smarter than than its occasionally crude execution would have you believe.

Beasts Clawing At Straws demands attention and patience, but thus happily ends up amply rewarding both.
