Fortunately, there isn’t a whiff of cynicism to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Burton shows real affection for the first film’s characters and genuine curiosity about how they’re doing three decades or so later.

Good news: the macabre, anarchic spirit of “Beetlejuice” has been successfully passed down to Baby Beetlejuice. Bad news: it’s on screen for about 60 seconds.

Whenever schmaltz threatens to take over, Burton is always ready to rupture the tone with one more morbid gag. Coherence may not be his strong point, but as he’s always known, disintegration has its charms.

It’s revealing that Burton has bothered to resurrect this ancient material. Like Lydia, the director has cashed in on his past.

Realistically, it was never going to match the instant cult appeal of the original, but it has a lot of fun trying.

A better-than-expected legacy sequel with its heart in the right place.

It manages to return to the tone, style and sense of humour of the first film without major problems, complementing it with a messy narrative full of secondary characters, which nevertheless respects all the original ones. Full review in Spanish.

Even though Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has about 5 plots too many and a pretty standard legacy sequel approach&#59; I found myself smiling and laughing from beginning to end.

While it's a real treat to see 73-year-old Michael Keaton re-inhabit the afterlife’s unpredictable bio-exorcist Betelgeuse with gleefully ghoulish visuals, that grating voice and his crackerjack comic timing, there are too many plot threads that distract
