Message received, but it went over the top. I've seen worse for this price range, though, so it was an okay project.

Well, I tried to like it. Beneath Us has a few good things going for it. The basic premise isn't a bad one, and giving the antagonists a back story to explain their hatred might have made this a pretty sinister film. The Hispanic actors are quite good, and their dialogue was well written, but I was left wondering if the powers that be ran out of money, ideas, and a reason to care after they finished with that side of the movie. How anyone thought that Lynn Collins was the right choice for the lead, or that her parts of the script were anything close to realistic, is nothing short of deluded. Her character was campy at best and beyond annoying at worst. Much of the movie was senseless violence for the sake of shock with nothing to explain why a couple would hate Mexicans enough to torture and murder them, much less go to the trouble of building a terror ranch, complete with an underground crypt and a 15' high electrified fence. As with many poorly-written horror flicks, the future victims make amateurish decisions and do things that no one in their position would ever do (Come on, man....you have a gun in your hands, and you drop it because the woman who has been terrorizing you for a couple of days is biting you in the leg right in front of your eyes? SHOOT HER!!). And please don't get me started on the radio voiceover at the end....

This B-movie thriller's title is more clever than the movie itself but it does have an interesting plot: a rich white couple who flips houses hires 4 Hispanic day-laborers to do all their upgrades but, it's not long before the men discover how twisted and racist the couple is and that they have more in mind than just cheap labor. The main problems with this film are the heavy-handed political messaging, over-the-top acting of the rich couple, and a poor script. The movie has failed attempts at dark comedy/morbid satire but it also has some tension to pull you along into wanting to see how it all plays out. Some people hated the ending but for a thriller/horror film it was satisfying enough for me. It definitely could have been a better film but, IMHO, I've seen worse! 10/2020

This movie is guaranteed to stir some kind of emotion. If you can separate your political views and stance on immigration from the experience of watching this film, the entertainment factor is great. I found myself rooting for the protagonist(s) and feeling their despair. After the first scene of violence, I became that aware anything is possible yet was occasionally shocked by the punishments brought down on the victims. The side story between the 2 brothers could have been more relevant. I get the point of the strained relationship between them but would have appreciated a little more back story. I suggest being mindful of the audience you watch this film with. I watched the movie with my husband. We share similar views in politics and immigration and still had a deep discussion after. It may be difficult not to react to the end of the movie.
