Important and historic but might not fit modern expectations for what a film should be.

A nice example of quality German movie from the beloved 20's, the most creative German period. This time it's a "city symphony", very popular genre of the time (let's remember Vertov's "Man with a movie camera"). Very skillfully edited and produced. I was spellbound by the magnificent shots of one day of Berlin's life. Particularly impressive is the first reel when it is still early, quiet on the streets and then people start to appear and the locomotive of day life begins to gain momentum.

An incredible so called 'City Film' that unforgettable catches a single day in Berlin from the mid 1920's (which is very different to today ie post WWII Berlin) The shots are so well defined & the interesting places that where filmed makes this a surreal wonderful experience. It really takes you on a adventure & shows the simple & soaring beauty of the old days of Berlin. Not for everyone but I thought a wonderful delight.

Image and sound, rhythm and music, an entrancing audiovisual experiment in five parts showing a day in the life of a city that lives and breathes, with a fantastic use of Soviet intellectual montage to create brilliant visual rhymes on the many different aspects of urban life.

A visually compelling portrayal of this all-engulfing juggernaut.

Interesting early documentary that allows you to experience early 20th century Berlin. That being said as with most early silent documentaries it is very tedious and hard to sit through.

The city symphony feature film masterpiece that anticipated Dziga Vertov's The Man With the Movie Camera, although the two movies are quite different, because Ruttmann's work is more centred on the images he takes themselves than on the filmmaking process and the analogic editing. In this film we truly get a genuine feel of the movement of a whole city, the passing of time and the advancement in the industrial and social lifestyle of the people. With the wonderful original soundtrack finally restored, the film is just a magnificent experience.

a great exercise in flanerie! the shots composed were absolutely breathtaking, and the soundtrack, by basing itself in the sounds of the city definitely helped create the feel of a symphony of the city. the film definitely helped showcase the ordinary in a new, fascinating way.
