Between Worlds

If you saw Mandy and wished more Nicolas Cage movies were dark, weird, and personal: watch Between Worlds and be careful what you wish for.

Writer-director Maria Pulera aims for something with the comic grotesquerie of David Lynch - full of eccentric lowlifes and identity swapping - but a more straightforward plot. What she ends up with is ultimately too tame and under-thought.

While not quite up to the outrageousness level of so many Cage vehicles in recent years, Between Worlds features enough WTF moments to satisfy the prolific actor's many fans who can't wait to see what he's up to next.

"Nothing that I can say is going to make any sense," Julie tells a confused acquaintance at one point. Please believe her.

Between Worlds may not have the surrealness or the haunting cinematography of Mandy. It's the kind of rare cinematic alchemy that no amount of planning and budget can create but happens once when all the planets align for one lucky director.

This is just straight-up awful. I weep for Franka.

There are a few moments of inspired lunacy, but for the most part, it's sluggish and tedious.

A dumb, lazy and cringe-inducing mess. Cage and Potente deserve better.
