[A] smart little thriller.

With some flashes of inspired direction, like an upwards through-the-typewriter shot, this hybrid of fastidious huis clos thriller and trauma drama at least has an in-progress human energy and scope.

When the all-important moment of catharsis that every good scary movie requires comes around, it’s palpable. But writers, and other creative types, just might feel it a little bit extra.

A well devised tale of the struggle to create, Blank places woman and machine in uncomfortable circumstances with interesting results.



Blank descends slightly into histrionics in its last act, but this is still a smart, well-considered spin on what is now well-trodden material and, brought to the screen on a relatively small budget, is something of a low-key triumph.

Taking elements of isolation classics like The Shining, Ex-Machina, Misery, and Moon, Blank makes a compelling new cinematic prison that's well worth spending time in.

Blank uses its science fiction elements to highlight the human experience, turning a locked-room horror into a compelling character drama.
