Blow the Man Down

What a pleasure to see actors like June Squibb, Margo Martindale, and Annette O'Toole in roles that usually go to men, complex, wily, and tough.

A tightening of the screws would have helped this thriller immensely. But Cole and Krudy are after something a little different here than just two sister and one downward spiral.

It's normally not a great sign when the lead characters are less compelling than anything around them, but the Connollys' predicament opens up the weird bits of village mythology and feminine conspiracy that secretly drives the film forward.

I was in from the opening prelude, a quasi-Greek chorus of fishermen singing an old sea shanty, their great voices mixed with the musicality and rhythms of their tools and work.

It's an incredibly cunning mystery with a charming cast of characters who ultimately crack under the pressure of keeping up with their appearances.

A perfectly icy thriller.

It’s an original story, which is rare, that is different, and you find an appreciation will build as the quarantined days melt together.

It doesn’t all flesh out perfectly but the twists keep you guessing and the film really sticks its finish.

it’s impossible to shake the feeling that with more time to explore this place and these characters, this could have been something quite special. Instead, it’s merely well-done.
