Call Jane

The topic is important the acting is great but the script is preachy and weak. Sadly the film is all too timely.

Chicago, 1968. Joy (Elizabeth Banks), una ama de casa, lleva una vida normal con su esposo y su hija. Su viaje para encontrar una solución a su situación le lleva hasta una organización clandestina de mujeres, liderada por Virginia (Sigourney Weaver), que le brindará una alternativa más segura y le cambiará la vida. En 1968, con toda la mierda política que iba llegando, solo faltaba que las mujeres no pudieran decidir qué hacer con su cuerpo, y no poder abortar, ¿y sí eran violadas? Que esa injusticia no deseada caiga en un embarazo y te toque remediar con algo que por ahora no has querido y encima no puedas abortar. ¿O sí tenían las de perder con ese embarazo y les causan problemas de salud o muerte? Pues aquí están, el grupo clandestino de Virginia (protagonizado por la gran Sigourney Weaver además de ser un personaje real, ella es Heather Booth) para contradecir las palabras de los burócratas de los casi 70, haciendo el bien por las mujeres que lo necesitan. Una de ellas, que se adentra en el grupo, después de su aborto de un coste de 600 dólares, Joy (Elizabeth Banks), madre de una adolescente, un marido criminalista con algunos momentos prescindibles, siendo ama de casa bebiendo a las 4 de la mañana y preparadora de galletas incomibles, y veremos cómo su vida pasa a abortar embarazos no deaseados y cuidar a esas chicas junto a las Jane. Presenciamos unas sólidas y exquisitas interpretaciones de Elizabeth y Sigourney que te dan ganas de estar con las Jane ayudando al movimiento. Un filme muy bien escrito que no aburre y recalco la interpretación de Cory Michael Smith (Dean) ese médico misterioso que opera a las embarazadas, me encanta, y siempre le he echado de menos en la serie Gotham. Sin embargo, me entristece el hecho de tratar esta árida historia estadounidense con superficialidad sabiendo lo importante que es este grito ahora mismo. Ya que gracias a la sentencia que se dió en el caso Roe contra Wade el aborto se legalizó en 1973, pero hasta hace poco hemos vuelto 50 años atrás. Aunque la película abarca todo el rato simpleza y superficialidad para tratar un tema complejo y terrible, entendemos el objetivo de Nagy, que se ve claro desde la escena de la manifestación yippie. Y por eso es una película bizarra, impávida y conmovedora. Real e importante para la sociedad desde ahora. RICARDO VALERO, AGOSTO 2023, ESPAÑA.

It started pretty dry, but overall a very solid movie

Call Jane is a very well crafted and made film about a very important subject that even though it doesn't hit great heights is very worthy and well worth a watch. Set in 1968 in Chicago we find Joy, a suburban housewife married to a successful lawyer. She is pregnant expecting their second child. After repeated episodes of illness her doctor informs her she has a lung disorder that will likely kill her if her pregnancy goes to full term. In that time abortion was illegal so Joy's dilemma is huge. An add on a street pole offers a solution. ‘Call Jane' gives a phone number to a organisation that offers abortion at a fee. Keeping it secret from her family she not only gets the abortion but ends up being a major part of the group. This is a compelling look at a very brave and essential group of women helping other women in need. It's also done expertly through the eyes of Joy and her family. It's all done with a rather lighthearted touch which keeps it from greatness but it's definitely worthy. And a very solid cast including Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver aid a very important story.

Call Jane clears a clean path through controversial mazes to point out the value of choice, choice to live. Subject is arguable but this tale's journey of empowerment is an exciting portrayal. A well written story that closely examines a past that was spent in a hurry by the human race. Great cast putting up a fantastic performance that's thorough and precise. Loved the background audio that's perfectly relatable. Great visuals that captures the momentum of the story and it's setup. Good collection of characters too. Call Jane is a rare gem of a movie that's exciting and thought provoking. Enjoy.

Brilliant acting. Understated. Confident directing. The story we heard from our mothers and what a dark world it was. The screenplay is fascinating and perfectly arced and timed. No spoilers but Sigourney Weaver got me going there for a minute!!

CALL JANE is a fictionalized drama about the Jane Collective, a clandestine Chicago group that helped women secure safe, illegal abortions in the late '60s and early '70s. An effective and entertaining historical drama for sure, and one that takes on new import in light of the 2022 Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Really good movie and a smart way to try and reach people on this topic (even though the people who need to see it won't). Elizabeth Banks is an underrated dramatic actor - she is terrific.
