I was nervous about this because I loved the book so much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Bella Ramsey was perfect, and Andrew Scott really stole the show.

I'm getting exhausted by these smug "history but make it modern!" comedies. Really only a handful of movies have pulled it off. Everything else, this included, reads as lazy

Mikey's Movie Review: Catherine Called Birdy (2022) It's 1290 and while Lady Catherine (a.k.a Birdy), the youngest child of Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott) and Lady Aislinn (Billy Piper) might frolic and play carefree, medieval England isn't without it's peril. Her father has been reckless with the family's money and now only a marriage union between 14 year old Birdy and a wealthy suitor will save them from losing everything. Something Birdy is determined to avoid at all costs! Thanks to a winning performance by Bella Ramsey (The Last Of Us) in the title role, this simple, funny but semi-tragic tale is a true delight. It's moments of quirkiness often followed by genuine sadness, using language based in the past yet vibrant and relatable. Recalling Emma Thompson's flair with Sense & Sensibility, writer / director Lena Dunham has taken a beloved book (by Karen Cushman) and made a truly affecting coming of age film. Pretty good. Maybe deserves a full 4-star rating, but...
