Near perfection. Woodard delivers a career-defining performance that will hollow you out. Aldis Hodge and Danielle Brooks have a single scene together that is an acting masterclass. Chukwu is going to do great things.

CLEMENCY was such a bore it took real effort to focus on the action. In the end I felt as if it was me trapped for life in some dingy cell.

I literally made this account to review this. The fact rotten tomatoes rates this so highly says a lot. BORING depressing film that goes on and on and on. Totally and utterly boring, grotesquely overblown. Don't do this to yourself. And yet again if this site says a film is good, steer clear.

I've seen several death row / capital punishment movies, but none of them affected me like this one. That's because of the performance of Alfre Woodard. This woman is masterful. She doesn't just play the role of a conscience-stricken prison warden who has witnessed too many executions; she inhabits it. In the final execution scene, the camera stays on her face for a full two minutes, in which she silently expresses so much more than any lines of dialogue could ever express. I assume that anyone who is planning on watching this film understands that it's necessarily heavy drama, without a happy ending. So be ready. Even though the subject matter is morose, Woodard is amazing to watch.

Alfre is the warden and burdened by the death penalty - especially the one in the film that follows a botched execution.

no interesting story here - just a soap box.
  • Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
In some scenes Alfre Woodard reaches a place that seems beyond acting. She makes involuntary intakes of breath feel like a trembling of the soul. Aldis Hodge is also excellent. Tough, terse filmmaking. Doesn't need to preach. The moral outrage is clear through the actions and emotions.

Not the usual prison tale that not only has such an interesting dilemma at it's core but also doubles as a character study for the female protagonist.

Hard to watch but surely true to life...and death.

The acting is excellent but Clemency is a boring movie.
