The part when the two characters combine was good at the start, but when it turned into classic eldritch monster hostility, it started to get stale

By far the best adaptation of an HPL story. No compromise on the protagonist's helplessness against cosmic horror.

An idiosyncratic horror piece. I'm not entirely sold on some of the weirdness of early scenes, that being said its second half is memorable and effective.

There's enough other positive reviews that say what's good about this movie, so I just wanted to touch on some of the negative reviews. 1. "The acting is bad" I think that the characters in this are far more interesting and nuanced than most characters in horror movies. Nics performance is of course a bit Nic Cage, but the way you see him slowly go insane and show the worst parts of himself is interesting. 2. "Inaccurate to the OG story" This movie is BASED on HP Lovecrafts story, it doesn't have to an exact copy. Book to film is already hard to pull off anyways. Also some complain that they show the color, because it's supposed to be incomprehensible. Come on guys. It's a movie. If they didn't show the color I garentee that those same people would complain that you never see the color. 3. "Its too convoluted" Not every movie has to spoon feed you the story. And I get it if some people have a harder time understanding, this movie does have a bit much going on at once after all. But to be blunt, just because someone doesn't get the point, doesn't mean the point isn't there. Overall I think it's a fun ride, if a bit messy. 8/10

wtf was that, the actors are simply horrible, as much as the special effects, the story doesn't make any sense, you don't get a single fright, the interactions are garbage, the only good thing is the photography. That's it.

Amazing movie in all respects. Can't wait for Dunwich Horror.

My wife and I both loved this slow burn, trippy, Lovecraftian gem. The story is excellent, the dialogue natural and it's all delivered by a committed cast who are universally excellent. Cage is back to fine form and shows that with the right script/director, what a truly talented actor he can still be. A rare treat of a movie that is directed with huge applom and provides something genuinely different. Highly recommended to anyone looking for sci-fi horror with a beaufully indie sensibility.

oh my god. Nicolas Cage best film in years

A perfect build up to a satisfying and frustrating finally filled with top notch gore and awkward as hell acting I love it. Nicolas cage is born to be in this role and every role in the last few, hitting his weird stride of strange beautiful films.
