Saw this in a the theater with a friend. I didn't care for it. She hated it. I found what was billed as sophisticated social satire to be little more than dopey trope and tired chestnut dressed up in the emperors new clothes. Not a single laugh from anyone in the room. The few after discussions, were not without eyerolls. It's a pity. Great performances by Gadon, Sarsgaard et, al.

Directed by Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman, Coup! (2023) offers a satirical exploration of political upheaval through the lens of dark comedy. With a talented cast led by Peter Sarsgaard, Billy Crudup, and Kate Mara, the film delves into the chaotic machinations of an unexpected power grab in a fictionalized modern government. While its ambitions to critique societal and political dysfunction are clear, the execution falters at times, resulting in a film that entertains but struggles to leave a lasting impression. The performances are undoubtedly one of Coup!’s strongest assets. Peter Sarsgaard delivers a layered portrayal of a disillusioned bureaucrat caught in the eye of the storm. His ability to balance cynicism with moments of genuine vulnerability keeps his character compelling throughout. Billy Crudup, as the scheming antagonist, imbues his role with charm and menace, making his motives both understandable and chilling. Kate Mara, though underutilized, shines in her moments of screen time, lending a sharp, grounded presence to the chaos unfolding around her. However, the script occasionally undercuts the actors’ efforts with dialogue that leans too heavily on exposition or feels overly rehearsed. The direction by Stark and Schuman reflects their commitment to blending satire with suspense. Certain sequences, such as a heated debate in a shadowy boardroom or a frantic escape through the dimly lit halls of power, are executed with precision and flair. The pacing, however, is uneven, with the film's first act dragging slightly as it establishes the political landscape. Once the titular coup begins, the narrative picks up momentum, but the payoff in the final act feels rushed, leaving several plot threads unresolved or underexplored. Cinematography by Rachel Morrison deserves commendation for its clever use of light and shadow to mirror the moral ambiguity of the characters. Stark contrasts between the sterile government offices and the gritty, dimly lit back alleys where clandestine deals are struck create a visually engaging dichotomy. These contrasts, however, are somewhat undermined by overly frequent cuts, which occasionally disrupt the rhythm of pivotal scenes. The editing, while energetic, leans too much into a frenetic style that can leave viewers disoriented rather than absorbed. The film’s score, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, is a haunting, minimalist backdrop that underscores the tension and paranoia that permeate the story. Their use of dissonant strings and eerie electronic tones is effective, though the music sometimes overwhelms quieter, character-driven moments. A more restrained approach in these scenes might have better complemented the performances. Thematically, Coup! tackles timely issues such as corruption, power dynamics, and the fragility of democratic institutions. It skewers the absurdities of political theater with biting humor, but its satirical edge is dulled by a lack of nuance in its messaging. The film often opts for broad strokes over subtlety, resulting in a commentary that feels heavy-handed compared to sharper political satires like Armando Iannucci's In the Loop or Adam McKay’s Vice. While Coup! clearly aims to provoke thought, its ambition occasionally exceeds its grasp, leaving some of its social critiques feeling surface-level. Comparisons to Austin Stark’s previous work, particularly The Runner (2015), reveal growth in his ability to blend personal drama with political commentary. However, where The Runner excelled in its intimate character studies, Coup! spreads itself thin with a sprawling ensemble and multiple subplots. The film might have benefited from a tighter focus, honing in on fewer characters or streamlining its narrative to emphasize its strongest elements. Despite its flaws, Coup! is an engaging watch for those who enjoy politically charged dramas with a darkly comedic twist. Its moments of brilliance, particularly in the performances and visual design, make it a worthwhile experience, even if it falls short of being truly groundbreaking. For casual viewers, the film offers a tense and often amusing exploration of power and ambition, while more seasoned film enthusiasts may find themselves wishing for deeper insights and sharper commentary. Coup! is an ambitious but uneven political satire that entertains more often than it enlightens.

Very cynical movie revelling in a successful white collar person being taken down by a crass blue collar worker.
  • Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
It was entertaining, not boring, but there wasn't much of a point. It's skewed; it lost its way trying to play both ends against the middle.
  • Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Although it takes time to get exciting, Coup! builds up the pace and suspense to become a decent thriller. While some of its fact-based story has been embellished for theatrical flair, it remains an entertaining and insightful period drama.

Entrusting one's hard-earned money to the wrong hands can have devastating consequences. My journey began innocently enough, sparked by the success story of a former coworker who boasted of her newfound wealth and attributed it to the guidance of an investment coach. Fantastic movie! Watched it twice in 24 hours. The setting (amazing Blairsden Mansion amongst others), time period, satirical plot, character development....oh and the ending! ALL highly engrossing and well done. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this film, especially with the direct metaphor to the covid pandemic. This movie is richly textured and visually stunning. Very smart.

There wasn't any substance to the movie, any idea or feeling. What it tried to tell, prove some point, it failed to follow through. It felt like a copy of many those that were great before, and a bad one. Monk was sexy, though.

Coup! is a fun ride! It is categorized as a comedy, but we really didn't experience its comedic chops. But, it was compelling, complicated, and really made you want to stick with it to see what next bizarre turn was going to be witnessed. Worth it!

Eat the rich. Better than The Menu, not quite as strong as Parasite (but what is). Sarsgaard is great. Lot of fun.
