Roger Kumble's attempt to modernize "Les Liaisons Dangereuse" provides a lewd, lascivious and downright cruel story. As summer draws to a close wealthy aristocrat Kathryn Mertueil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) makes a bet with her stepbrother Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe) that if he can seduce and corrupt the new headmaster's daughter before school starts she'll have sex with him, if he loses she gets his most prized possession; his vintage Jaguar car. But, Sebastian finds himself genuinely falling in love with dangerous consequences. Phenomenal performances from Gellar, Philippe, Resse Witherspoon and Selma Blair. "Cruel Intentions" takes everything we love about the 90s teen films and twists it to a degree that it's still charming but dark.

A brilliant film nicely produced and highly entertaining. It will keep you glued to the screen with it's wit, humor and nicely done screenplay. The cinematography is amazing. Keep in mind this movie was made when we were all young. Highly recommended.

Definitely not Close and Malcovich not the best version but works for teenagers.

I am so glad the Ryan Phillippe experience was relatively short lived, he is so awful in this. I just struggled to find anything that pulled me in with the plot or characters, most are insufferable and show no consistency.

A drama with a splash of teen romance. The storyline is soap opera material, and I don't complain about it. I really love how Sarah Gellar portrayed a cunning mischieful teenager with lots of morale issues. My favorite part is definitely the ending scene the downfall of Sarah Gellar with the verve song is a cinematic legend.

So much of this film doesn't stand the test of time, but one thing does and always will - Sarah Michelle Gellar's Kathyrn: watch it for her performance. You can also see the charm that made Reese Witherspoon a star and the comedic gifts of Selma Blair.

an upper east side teenage summer love affair! this movie made a cultural impact in more than one generation and it has served as the base for modern stories about rich kids and their unbelievable lives. with such iconic and amazing leading roles from the four main characters, a story that keeps you at the edge of your seat and the very unique charisma the character of sebastian enrolls into the audience, this film delivers in a major way. the seductiveness is astonishing, as well as the childish bet and the similar personalities of the step siblings. the perfect late nineties setting, in the summer, with occasional trips to the hamptons and no parents around made me feel like i was watching the prequel of gossip girl. each character's different personality brings something new to the table: cecile's naiveness, kathryn's ambition, annette's purity and sebastian's delusion. from the very little scenes, like the pool one of the one surrounding the car, to the more intense and romantic ones, everything fits perfectly curated and rightfully part of the upper east side. the ending was a little unexpected for me and a little more dramatic than it could have been (i guess deaths in teen dramas were also a things two decades ago), but the car scene parallelisms between the first and final scene as well as the truth coming to the light were great ways to compensate the tragic events. in spite of the abuse of drama here and there, the silliness of the movie itself and the toxicity on relationships that this one portrayed, it made a statement and shaped how movies and tv shows about crazy rich kids, specifically in new york, were made from then on! A CULTURAL REST MOMENT NONETHELESS!

This film was unlike anything out at the time and although it may seem cheesy to teens in the 2020s, in the late 90s, this movie was sexy, scandalous, and made every girl gushing over Ryan Phillippe.

I still don't understand why so many people like this movie. Are you supposed to feel bad for Sebastian at the end? He's a terrible person throughout the whole movie. It's laughably bad.
