Yan's debut as a writer/director is a mostly sturdily constructed, and deftly edited, series of 'meanwhiles,' a sprawling narrative of loosely and closely connected people whose lives intertwine in a variety of ways.

Dead Pigs's intermingling of grit and polish is hugely satisfying: a potent combination of pearls and swine.

[Doesn't have] a plot to propel it forward so much as principals who cross paths, clash, and tug the narrative this way and that. But at least they’re lively and compelling.

Yan's delightful musical and narrative riffs of American comedy are also a homage, and are represented in Joe Yao's production design...

Strong acting and distinctive rich direction tie these handful of quirky street level story lines together.

Caustic but ultimately warm-and-fuzzy, Dead Pigs is a splashy, antic, enjoyable film that only overplays its hand with too many narrative bow-tying contrivances at the end.
