Should your New Year's watching require the occasional break from grim awards fare and grimmer real-world news, you could do a lot worse than this well-intentioned tale of mirthful mouthfuls and other appetites.

[A] mouthwatering foodie drama that is as appetizing as the dishes whipped up in it.

It looks like an authentic period drama and has a pleasant spirit, even if it has difficulty keeping things totally interesting.

Full marks must go to whoever prepared the food for the film, as well as to cinematographer Jean-Marie Dreujou whose beautifully framed and lit work is a major contribution to this admittedly conventional yet richly enjoyable glimpse into the past.

DP Jean-Marie Dreujou’s breathtaking images go well beyond the sumptuous dishes. The rolling hills, the grassy meadows, the autumn colors – they are all shot with a painterly beauty and would make for a stunning coffee table book.

Delicious is far more than tasty eye candy. Strip back the inescapably gobsmacking palette, and you have an enveloping story of regret, freedom and will set against the backdrop of pre-revolutionary France.

A delightful, sensory treat, Délicieux is a lush, bright, inventive take on class divides and one of the imagined birthplaces of fine dining in this lovely and engaging story of a 18th century French cook right before the French revolution.

Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer Jean-Marie Dreujou with an eye toward the beauty of food and the lush landscape, Delicious is a recipe for sumptuous cinematic delights.
