With plenty of heart and soul, Devotion is an emotional spectacle, packed with soaring highs and gut-wrenching potency.

Though Majors is able to show Brown’s inner turmoil, a spark with Powell never ignites. There’s an air of politeness that governs this relationship. In their attempt to present a wholesome friendship, the writers end up showing one that doesn’t connect.

There are stretches of Devotion where it doesn’t seem like all that much is happening, but then you look closer and you realize that just about everything is happening.

Though it hits all the expected beats, it’s the attention to the little details that makes “Devotion” take flight.

As an intellectual dismantling of white savior narratives, “Devotion” is smartly done&#59; as an enjoyable heartwarmer to watch with your uncle, it’s stiff when it should soar.

It’s committed to the hallmarks of the genre, for better and for worse.

Devotion doesn’t have the impact it should have, even if Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell give powerhouse performances.

The aviation drama tells the thrilling and tragic story of Jesse Brown, the first African-American aviator to complete the basic flight training program of the U.S. Navy.

Devotion may not break the mould for war or aviation films. Still, it is a well-directed and entertaining film that is perhaps a tad too long but elevated by superb performances from Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell.

Stylized and cultured, Devotion soars when least expected and is brought to life by its talented ensemble cast led by Jonathan Majors & Glen Powell.
