Don't Let Go

For genre fans not yet burnt out by time-travel spectacles, Don't Let Go might be worth the watch.

It's profoundly preposterous, often snortingly stupid, but also strangely enjoyable.

On paper, Don't Let Go's premise - a supernaturally flecked crime story with a hint of time travel - should be exciting but it is let down down by workaday writing and routine filmmaking.

There's not much excitement here, and the whodunnit, when it comes, feels pretty irrelevant.

The time-traveling investigation is indeed optimistic, but in reality and execution, it's just magical thinking wrapped up in a fussy, overly convoluted plot.

What I do care about in this movie is that little girl and her uncle -- that's a love story.

Don’t Let Go, sadly, is a genre time-warp thriller that has an all too obvious villain with a whodunit plot that has two gaping plot holes caused by puzzling character actions.

The movie never finds a balance between its concentration on character or conceit, and the resulting disproportion leaves it unsatisfying.

Borrowing from so many other stories makes it fairly predictable...but maintaining that attention comes from actors Oyelowo, Reid, and the rest of the cast members, who never let on that Don't Let Go lacks any real credibility.

So, the first thing you need to know about Don't Let Go is that there is a lot of talking. Like, a lot. Unfortunately, it drags what is potentially a fun little speculative flick.
