It's a really good film! The performances were amazing and the comedy was goofy and silly, I love this film and would definitely recommend!

We loved how Elf ate spaghetti with sweets and how he said that the yellow cars were dangerous. we absolutely HATED the intolerant dad. We recommend it , but it's still a Christmas movie. We thought it was good, and we liked a lot of the scenes. good actors, and good script. Another thing we absolutely HATED was the utterly cursed ending. We laughed when we saw that buddy was sitting on his father's lap. Buddy could fly, which was weird . 🙏

Best Christmas movie of all time! Will kills it as buddy the elf and it's a heartwarming comedy movie for everyone to enjoy

I didn't grow up watching this film as I did with other holiday classics, so I don't have the emotional attachment. Perhaps that's why I didn't connect with this one in the same way. Elf is a sweet, charming movie that's right at home amongst other holiday staples. It's one that certainly belongs to a simpler times when movies were just aloud to be wholesome with universal appeal. Will Ferrell's endearing (even if at times annoying) performance really carries the movie. I can't say it's one of my favourites though.

I wouldn't say I was necessarily avoiding this movie over the last 17 years, but it just wasn't one that I felt a need to go out of my way to watch. I appreciate much of Ferrell's work on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, but his post-SNL film career has been spotty at best. To my delight and surprise, I found this film to be utterly charming, much funnier than I anticipated and a welcome addition to my holiday viewing schedule. Let me get a couple negatives out of the way quickly. I don't think Caan was the right choice here. I appreciated him much more as the curmudgeonly businessman than the transformed humanitarian. The romance with Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel felt like an afterthought and a distraction, although I blame the screenplay more than Deschanel's performance. And the last quarter of the movie loses steam a bit and much of the humor and delight of what preceded it. All that aside, I think this may be the finest Ferrell screen performance I've seen, and it's one of those occasions where you literally can't imagine anyone else doing the role justice. And even though she doesn't have much of a role here, I must say that I don't know of another actress in modern cinema who has the ability to convey warmth and caring like Steenburgen. Despite an Oscar win 40 years ago, she is an underrated talent who deserves more opportunities than she has had. I didn't necessarily feel the holiday "glow" at the end that my favorite Christmas movies make me experience, but I'm sorry it took me so long to catch up with this movie. I also appreciated some of the subtle nods to other Christmas movies and specials that preceded it, most notably RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER. I now understand why this has become a family favorite for so many!

Will Ferrell's magnetic and charmingly childlike performance is just the cherry on top of this heartfelt, hilarious, and visually striking film that shows the best of Jon Favreau's directing chops.

Comedy is probably one of the most subjective genres out there. What's hilarious to some, is boring or off-putting to others. With that said, I haven't been a fan of Will Ferrell or his brand of comedy of which he has two styles, "the hyper child/frat guy in a adult's body," or "the straight-laced guy in a outlandish scenario." Jim Carrey and Chris Farley did the man-child shtick first, to varying degrees of success while Steve Carell and Leslie Nelson did the straight-laced role to perfection. In my opinion, Will never felt believable in these roles. You could tell he was acting which always came across as disingenuous. That being said, the movie Elf is a beloved modern Christmas classic (can you believe this movie is 20 years old?), so I thought I'd give it a chance... Annnnnnd, I didn't like it. I mean I appreciated the movie as whole, and thought Jon Favreau did an amazing job directing (paying homage to the Rankin/ Bass television specials was a nice touch), but the fish out of water story felt forced and most of the humor didn't land with me. In fact, it felt like the main issue stemmed from the poor writing and confused plot. Characters just accepted certain things Buddy did because, plot. I will admit though, I did appreciate seeing a young Peter Dinklage and the ending was quite heartwarming.
