    fire movie of the yr

Instead of the gritty, visceral horror of the originals, we get a bland, generic rehash that's about as scary as a kitten with a feather duster. Save yourself the disappointment and stick to the classics.

It’s been over 40 years since Sam Raimi introduced the ‘Evil Dead’ franchise into the horror genre combining gore and big laughs The previous entry was 2013’s remake by Fede Alvarez; now director Lee Cronin and executive producer Bruce Campbell brings the newest installment switching up the location from a cabin in the middle of the woods to an urban apartment building We start off familiarly with a group of kids in the woods in a cabin; one of the girls is sick then she starts acting savagely tearing them apart one by one, obviously this sets the tone for the previous day focusing on a family of five Amy Sutherland stars as a single mother Ellie yet one of her family members stumbles upon the cursed Necronomicon book in a basement after an earthquake opens up a small opening Ellie starts getting possessed by Deadite entities summoned by the book and they all have to survive the bloody carnage Her sister Beth has to try and hold it together if they are to save Ellie plus she’s an expecting mother This is super short and they don't let up on the gore Gets straight to the point and this family is likable Yet it isn't that memorable like the previous films though since the bodies pile up quick Some stuff is by the numbers even the allegory about motherhood and sisterhood But there's nice subtle callbacks and references for fans along with some very grisly kills and grotesque effects The Deadites not only do physical suffering but psychological as well as emotional suffering too The final monstrosity at the end was my favorite, looked like something out of HP Lovecraft Amy Sutherland is very much the best thing in this going through the ringer being funny, scary, covered in blood, and doing all these bodily contortions Director Lee Cronin knows how to deliver the goods pushing the boundaries of the franchise They make good use of limited space in this apartment complex too taking advantage of air vents, elevator cables, chainsaws, wopdchippers etc. I wasn’t 100% scared and I wanted to be more grossed out but this is still a fun project from filmmakers who clearly love the property

The movie isn't even scary, and the storyline is even worse.

Brilliant addition to the franchise. Loved the lead, and other characters. Story was fantastic and had one of the best opening scenes in years. It managed to be less funny by keep it's charm. The gore was 100% on point, the ideas for horrific scenes were so well thought out.

This was garbage which was like let's see how gory we can make a film. The plot is so weak. Don't bother.

Has enough new scares to keep me entertained and happy. Fun cast who you root for though out the film. Fans of the Evil Dead franchise will be satisfied enough even with the absence of the Ash character. A fun spooky movie to put on and revisit every now and then. Only complaints is the film plays it a bit too safe for common evil dead tropes really didn't give us nothing new we haven't seen.

Pretty standard stuff for an Evil Dead film, but still good enough for an entertaining watch.
