The movie had interesting imagery, but I still couldn't figure out what on earth is going on by the credits roll.

Unearthing Atmosphere, But Lacking Blaze Exhuma promises a chilling exploration of Korean folklore and the restless dead. While the film meticulously crafts a tense atmosphere, the slow burn sputters, leaving viewers wanting a more satisfying payoff. Choi Min-sik delivers a strong performance as Kim, a geomancer who consults on burial sites. When a family disrupts the peace of a potentially vengeful spirit, Kim and his team are called in to appease the restless soul. The film excels in its initial world-building. The rituals, cultural beliefs, and history surrounding Korean burial practices are fascinating. The slow unraveling of the family's past and the potential historical trauma tied to the restless spirit pique your interest. However, Exhuma's pacing becomes its undoing. The investigative process feels drawn-out, the scares are infrequent, and when they do arrive, they rely more on jump scares than genuine dread. The potential for a truly unsettling exploration of Korean vengeful spirits remains frustratingly untapped.

Brilliant! Definitely my favorite movie of 2024. I do not scare easily. And while this movie did not scare in the stereotypical manner (no jump scares, for example), it absolutely terrified me that the “good guys” might not pull their quest off. Wonderfully written and acted.

(6.5) Did not really land for me. Overlong, confusing, muddled and a bit silly. I agree with general comparisons with the Wailing, to which it does not compare favourably. The cast are solid and its well filmed... it also has a couple of quite iconic scenes and setpieces.

Kept me engaged the entire time. The ending was a bit confusing for me so I actually looked up a few topics that were mentioned. I learned that the writers put a ton of time and thought into the plot unlike a lot of US movies that have been made for past 10yrs. I was looking forward to watching this from the US for quite some time and actors, actresses, look and feel of movie were better than expected. Only complaint would be the CGI foxes looked fake and would have loved more background on Gisune otherwise exceptional!!!

It's no Wailing, but as a foreign viewer, I do always find Korean lore interesting. Exhuma just goes a little too deep into fantasy without the substance of the human condition so I found it a little boring.

I finally had the time to watch Exhuma….exceeded my expectations. Outstanding movie, I was captivated from finish to end. From the story, cinematography and the acting, outstanding.

You might think you know where this is going but you won't. It's a genuinely suprising horror piece that manages to be both scary and emotionally resonate. A rare combination.
