sad and depressing film. well acted well shot and a good soundtrack. i didnt buy dylan penn as a highschooler and the film is slow. i wanted more of a focus on the counterfit bills and the crimes but it was more of a focus on sean penn and his daughters relationship. sad ending and the film is worth a watch once just for the acting not the plot.

3.5 stars. Sean Penn playing a deadbeat, down-on-his-luck, drug partaking, criminal is like John Wayne playing a Cowboy. He has perfected that role. An now he has brought Dylan along. Oh my! There is so much talent in that family..... including mom (see "Land"). In "Flag Day", Sean plays the 'heavy as you would expect (and also Directs). But Dylan steals the spotlight as a Daughter who sees her Dad as bigger-than-life. But she grows up to see the fake fraud of a father he was/is. And yet, she never gives up on the fantasies he wove for her, in this true story. The chemistry between Sean and Dylan is in plain view. Totally outstanding performances. The Penn families' greatest talent is their ability to play a highly dramatic roles..... without any drama.

Wow, it's no wonder I'm 2% of the population according to Meyers Briggs 16 personality types 56% of the population is the other 1/16th of the 16 types and they probably gave this 2 stars and "Good Omen" 5 stars. This is also why I am a lone wolf, I just don't understand or agree with you all. My favorite stories are people's real life experiences. And Jennifer's is beautiful and so well written. I love ✍️ writing too, it is my art form of choice most often. The actress even reminded me of a best friend of mine from 15 to 16 years of age, she crossed over (died) at 16yr. She is so beautiful. I love Jennifer's personality and that it came through so well, dating a guy with a daughter made me look at this movie differently too, not having kids of my own. Jennifer's father reminded me of an ex of mine, very eccentric and also had been in jail for fraud and robbery, but he was so charismatic, charming, life of the party. It was interesting to see how her Dad was the first to break her heart, like my boyfriends daughter probably feels being a Daddy's girl that had to say good bye due to divorce at a young age. I never had to cut ties with a family member for being toxic. That would be hard in a different way than it was with ex lovers. When her Dad tried to come back I understood her conflicting in a way of how it felt when those toxic exes tried to come back, especially if you still loved them like obviously she loved her father in a whole different way. Well written and well acted.

Surprising reviews from critics alike. I found it to be a powerful film with superb acting and the 'melodrama' pales in comparison to the highly acclaimed Yellowstone and many more which are so over the top its laughable!!

Arrogance that's what this move is about. Sean Penn with too much control, trying to create a masterpiece and instead end up with a conglomeration of over emotional, disjointed scenes. How Brolin got roped into this mess who knows. Never trust Sean Penn with a plot. He's and actor he needs to stay in his lane. Watching him smoke cigarettes in most scenes and blowing smoke everywhere which he is dumb enough to do in life is annoying as well.

The main sin of the movie is that it is about 15 minutes too long. Sean Penn was his reliable self, and his daughter, Dylan, was extremely compelling in her role. I think it is something you either like or don't.

I really looked forward to this movie after hearing the beautiful song sung by Eddie Vedder's daughter. What a disappointment. The movie has ruined the song for me. The acting was mediocre, at best, but the worst is the story line. I get that it's a true story, but that's what makes it even worse. Trying to romanticize the relationship between a loser of a man and his daughter (for whom he was a shitty father) just makes everyone look pathetic. I'm an adolescent psych nurse, and I'm sick and tired of seeing the results of immature, narcissistic parenting. There's nothing "complicated" about Penn's character. He's just another asshole who should never have had kids.

Good movie...sad story, but real life!
