Fool's Paradise

Day seems to have nothing new or insightful to add beyond pointing out some heightened caricatures of who you meet in Hollywood. On his way to making his satire, Day forgot to add jokes.

A few funny cameos aside, it’s a lampoon without a rough edge in sight.

You’d need to be Blake Edwards to pull this off. One wishes Day had looked further afield than Hollywood for inspiration.

The film sprints past its targets, dealing glancing blows to subjects that have already been obliterated by decades’ worth of Tinseltown parodies. 


Fool’s Paradise doesn’t have anything especially sharp to say about the biz — and, in the absence of clever or indeed funny writing, the film’s weak center is exposed.

Fool’s Paradise is not worth the watch for even die-hard Always Sunny fans. Best to live in one’s own fool’s paradise and forget this film exists.

The ultimate paradox, sadly, is that what demonstrates the idiocy of Hollywood most clearly of all is the fact that this film was made at all.

Fool's Paradise is structured well and entertaining from beginning to end and a solid directing debut from Day.

There is just enough positive stuff happening in “Fool’s Paradise” to warrant giving Day another shot behind the camera. Hopefully, he can follow this up with something far leaner and more focused.
