The fist part of this movie successfully caught my eyes, but then the story didn't make much sense.I like its dark color—implying the feeling of tension at that time, and its brilliant to keep some sense of humor in tension

An instant classic of conniving twists and turns, with a splash of dramatic flare from famed director Zhang Yimou. The way the film ends caught me by surprise and I was moved. Glad I caught this one in the theater.

Great opening and impressive world building. But this movie felt much more like modern Hollywood than authentic Chinese. Tediously dramatic, too many story twists, little regard for the lives of extras, distracting modern music, little reprieve from the dour blue-grey colour scheme.

The last forty minutes are the essence.

Utterly disgraceful, a movie that washes the sins of Qin Hui and completely disrespects the historical hero, Yue Fei. There's a reason Qin Hui and his wife's statues kneel to this day at Yue Fei's temple, the director and script writer of this movie would do well to remember that. Even the idea of a "comedy" coupled with the title of Yue Fei's famous poem expressing his frustration at the court's lack of support to fight back against the invaders is absurd. For a non-Chinese audience who lack the historical knowledge of these people and the importance they hold in Chinese history and culture they can watch for just a simple movie, but I can't imagine any Chinese person with even an ounce of historical knowledge enjoying such nonsense.

Once upon a time, Zhang Yimou made good movies, but Full River Red is not one. While the production and scope of the film is huge which I can only applaud, however, as a comedy thriller trying to emulate the likes of the Coen brothers, it doesn't work. The cast doesn't commit to their bits and there's a horribly awkward tonal shift towards the end. Maybe just stop hiring Shen Teng for comedies, he isn't funny.

Fantastic movie. Intelligent screenplay with lots of twist and turns. Amazing how it combines tragedy with humour. Acting was top class. Another master piece by Zhang Yimou.

It is an incredibly subpar film. China's most famous director took on the task of writing the screenplay and assembled a talented group of comedic actors in China, but unfortunately, their efforts were overshadowed and wasted by an exceptionally poor script.

Zhang Yimou is the best and the most well-known movie director in China. Full River Red is the highest-grossing blockbuster during Spring Festival. It is set four years after patriotic General Yue Fei's death when the nation faces domestic turmoil and foreign aggression. A group of grassroots patriots who sacrifice their lives to seek revenge for Yue Fei, a military general who was framed and put to death by the top courtier of the time, Qin Hui. These grassroots soldiers sacrifice their lives in order to find out what General Yue Fei left on the wall of the ward in prison before his death, which turns out to be a poem entitled "Full River Red" and expresses general Yue's patriotic spirit, loyalty to the nation and determination to defend his country and takes back the lost territory. It inspires the whole army, as Sun Jun, the Yong General says, it deserves as there is Full River Red left in this world from now on.
