Grace and Grit is a powerful and moving film that tells the true story of Ken and Treya Wilber, a couple who faced the ultimate test of love and faith when Treya was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after their marriage. Based on Ken's acclaimed memoir of the same name, the film explores the spiritual and emotional journey of the Wilbers as they cope with Treya's illness and seek meaning and healing in their lives. The film is directed by Sebastian Siegel, who also wrote the screenplay and produced the film. Siegel shows a remarkable sensitivity and respect for the source material, as well as a keen eye for capturing the beauty and grace of nature, which plays a significant role in the film's aesthetics and symbolism. The film also features an original score by Alex Ebert, which adds to the emotional impact of the film. The film is anchored by the performances of Mena Suvari and Stuart Townsend, who play Treya and Ken respectively. Suvari delivers a stunning and courageous performance as Treya, who undergoes a physical and spiritual transformation as she battles cancer and embraces various forms of therapy and meditation. Suvari portrays Treya's pain, joy, vulnerability, and strength with authenticity and nuance. Townsend is equally impressive as Ken, who struggles to balance his role as a husband, caregiver, and philosopher. Townsend conveys Ken's devotion, frustration, and wisdom with subtlety and depth. Grace and Grit is a film that celebrates the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a film that will touch your heart and inspire your soul. It is a film that you will not forget.

I just finished Grace and Grit. Wow. It was brutal...an unexpected raw and stark jolt. It captures a deeply human and elemental experience...and doesn't let go. It's beyond words...I don't know what else to say. This film pierced something in me and it's still underway.

Having read the book years ago and being familiar with Wilber's work, I wanted to like this movie. I did not. I sincerely believe most of those involved with making the film had good intentions. I felt their intentions all the way through and that is just one of the many reasons I didn't like it. The trying got in the way.

I have no idea what the budget was for this (it couldn't have been much) but it LOOKS like a $50-75 million production. The camera is so intimate with these people, so present. Everything is so clear and personal and real. And when it needs to look BIG, it does that, too. From the opening scene, walking out onto the stage, through to the last, the camera is used in such a smart, artful way. Simply arvelous direction. And that's setting aside the beautiful philosophy at the film's heart. The idea that we are not our bodies or our emotions, but the ones experiencing these things... that's a powerful message, and a necessary one for those facingโ€”or who have loved ones facingโ€”a life-threatening or terminal illness.

The novel was one of the most powerful biographical works I've ever read, so it is fantastic that Siegel had the courage to even make this movie about a topic everyone is terrified of. That being said, it mostly hits the marks. Lacks somewhat in the biographical instantiation that Wilber fans will want, tends towards hero worship which is an annoying trend among Wilber fans, and fails to accomplish the visceral impact of the situation. It really isn't bad, but I can't imagine that a totally fresh viewer giving a random film a chance would understand what it is or enjoy it.
