If Gretel & Hansel doesn't turn out to be one of the year's genre highlights, 2020 will be a very good year at the movies indeed.

Gretel & Hansel is not the fairy tale you know.

On the plus side, this has very striking production design and impressive cinematography... [But] it's bleak where it should be intense. It's stylish, but not very scary.

Like Perkins' previous efforts, his latest operates on mood and atmosphere over narrative, and it's one that lacks mainstream appeal. The film is mesmerizing style over substance, but one that transports you if you're open to its high-concept spell.

Great art has every piece in intimate communion with the art as a whole. Gretel & Hansel takes an elemental approach to the folklore, gasping with the fears of the original material while exhaling a new mystique of its own.

Gretel & Hansel is a pretty uncommon horror flick. It possesses technical features worthy of the very best movies of the same genre, but its screenplay lacks creativity and overall quality.
