HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle

Because even if crows and cats battling in a dumpster doesn’t appeal to you, there’s still the promise of watching good athletes play a good game — and that’s worth a seat in the bleachers.

For the uninitiated, you might as well be a cat or a crow watching this: much of it will leave you cold or simply go over your head.

It's very much your standard issue "anime sports story," but it delivers on it. If you enjoy volleyball, you will have a lot of fun with it.

You have to admire director and co-writer Susumu Mitsunaka’s ability to stretch a single game to feature-length without it ever becoming dull and his attempts to make things as immersive as possible

Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle will make for an entertaining viewing experience for long-time followers of the anime... But if the names Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio mean nothing to you, you probably can give this a miss.

I appreciated the high energy and went along with the story well enough, but I can’t say I was all the way with it.

It’s a delightful watch for long-time fans that doubles as an entertaining sampler for those curious about this beloved series.

Those who have not religiously devoured the anime can just about appreciate the stakes of the rivalry between two high school teams, but would inevitably find themselves confounded at the plethora of rules and references that pepper the narrative...
