Ignore the facile review on the guardian. This is a masterpiece of double and triple crosses that outmanoeuvres all western attempts at political intrigue/espionage. Everything is brilliantly executed and probably the only film of this type that brought tears to my eyes with a thrilling and exulting end. The only difficulty is in keeping track of who's who with korean names. A truly brilliant film. :]

The movie was filmed incredibly well with some awesome action and directing, but it was a bit hard to follow the story and understand what was going on.

This espionage period thriller has some exciting elements, and I admire the production values and attention to details of the period. It also delivers some riveting action set-pieces, and the two lead performances by Lee Jung-jae as Park and Jung Woo-sung as Kim are outstanding. That said, the film lack tension, and has way too many twists and turns to be comprehensible. The events also requires an inexplicable negligence and incompetence from the security services in order for the plot to unfold, and not because in real life these lapses are possible. These problems with the plot machinations took away from my engagement with the film. It's still not a bad film, just not as good as I wanted it to be.

KOREA MAZE There's a point in every unfolding spy thriller where either all the seemingly disparate clues come together and the confounding series of mysteries gel into some sort of cohesive climax, or not. "Hunt" spends a lot of effort, multi-layered political intrigue, slick choreographed action scenes, and personal character development, in a great looking slice of Korean history, which unfortunately proves way too convoluted to follow. Granted, historic scholars will have an easier time of this, but it turns out that back in the eighties the North South conflict was complicated with enough internal factions that deciphering the good guys from the bad is near impossible. Squid Game leading man Lee Jung-Jae turns in a stellar performance as a many layered intelligent agent who is dealing with assassination attempts, possible coups, a standoffish daughter, and a competing intelligent agent who may or may not be evil incarnate. He also directs, so hands quite full. The spy twists are many and complex, and soon become one big knot. Hard to cheer for anyone when no one is wearing white cowboy hats. A score card of who's who, and what factions are involved would be most helpful. Best to just stop thinking and go along for the action ride, which admittedly, is really quite good. - hipCRANK

Overall, if you're seeking a strong thriller with some incredible action sequences thrown in the mix, Hunt will undoubtedly appeal to you. The film goes off with a bang and a plot that repeatedly keeps viewers guessing the twists and turns. Leading performances from Lee Jung-jae (who also serves as Director) and Jung Woo-sung are solid and compelling. The visuals are great too. With so much praise, my biggest hurdle while watching was its pacing, which starts strong but weakens as the plot becomes more complex. Many aspects flew over my head far too often. However, at its core, some impressive work is presented from start to finish, and the experience is welcoming, even if the film demands several rewatches to understand everything better.
