Hurt

Hurt is going to be divisive for many. It's deliberately paced and places a strong emphasis on broken relationships with flawed characters that aren't easy to root for. It's not conventional, but it does attempt to put fear back into the slasher.

Hurt is a well-crafted experimental horror film that plays with multiple key aspects of slashers while pouring a fresh, unconventional take on the genre.

Not just a simple horror film, it also focuses on constructing a story involving human behaviour.

Hurt does achieve a genuine nightmarish quality. How much this compensates for its deficits will be in the eye of the individual viewer.

Hurt is a film which works way beyond its genre trappings. Yes, it's a horror film (and a dark one at that) but it also has the construction of an excellent drama. It's this what ultimately makes Hurt the best horror film of the year.

The places it does eventually go are graphic and nasty and seriously disturbing, and when we get to them, we realize how everything that came before was setting us up.

A slow-burn slasher that doesn't amount to much.
