Infinity Pool

It seems a shame that the film’s promising first half is swamped by its second half with its hallucinogenic descent into sex and violence...

It’s a wacky but quite original premise, and Cronenberg has found some interesting actors to bring it to life, especially Mia Goth, showing that her recent turn as a bloodthirsty starlet in Ti West’s Pearl by no means exhausted her bag of tricks.

Brandon Cronenberg, son of David, continues to rehash his father’s themes and preoccupations with this wearisome grand guignol body horror about the primal power of, yep, sex, death and reproduction.

It may not be for everyone, but I dived deep into Infinity Pool – twice – and enjoyed the hell out of the experience.

Brandon Cronenberg definitely has a way with words, but he’s even more of a craftsman when it comes to visuals, especially trippy, CGI-laced montages.

Cronenberg incisively critiques global inequalities in a world where being rich can not only buy you anything, it can allow you to get away with murder over and over again.

I had a lot of trouble watching this because I found it very disturbing. If you are a horror fan, you might like this. I am not, but I did find this movie well crafted and well acted.

All in all, this is still a lush, queasy, interesting film, despite not being an unequivocal triumph like the extraordinary Possessor.

The film has a barely passes because visually it is visually interesting, it is entertaining most of the time (but not all), and Alexander Skarsgard and Mia Goth save it with their performances. [Full review in Spanish]

Infinity Pool is intense, nightmarish, overwhelming and, most troubling of all, pretty sexy.
