Jane

It is refreshing to see a film focus so much on the complex intricacies of female relationships but that has nothing to do with sex, either between the young women themselves or with men, who barely feature here.

A slow burn thriller where complicated YA issues and vengeful social media posts make for a less than potent mix.

Jane is psychological rather than visceral, but this is no discredit to the film. In fact, in its overarching message – one which only hoves into view at the end – it has plenty to say about success, and those who succeed.

Jane ultimately succeeds in being a bite-size slice of teen melodrama with a message.

Jane is an interesting watch, and certainly a good showcase for showing both Petsch and Bailey as more multidimensional, skilled performers.

A smart film.

Heinously using suicide as a story gimmick, Jane is the type of formulaic teenage drama movie that looks it could have been made as disposable Netflix content. Too many plot holes and unanswered questions ruin any credibility that Jane tries to have.

Bullying story is engaging but problematic&#59; drugs, drinking.

Although it admirably tackles cyberbullying, identity theft, mental health, and affirmative action, this coming-of-age drama lacks the subtlety or surprise to make a deeper impact.

A mildly engaging, well-acted and dark psychological thriller that ultimately bites off more than it could chew.
