I think the criticism this film has received is generally unwarranted and unfair. It is very uplifting and the music is brilliant. My advice is don't listen to the nay sayers and decide for yourself.

A better film than Sony's previous take on the Nativity Story, The Star, seeing how "the birth of Jesus but a musical" is a much easier-to-swallow concept than "the birth of Jesus from the animals' perspective". Admittedly, when you set aside the musical gimmick, this film is, all things considered, a pretty standard take on the Nativity story with some silly humour to keep children amused and Antonio Banderas' casting as Herod the Great only being for the sake of having a big name in the cast. He honestly felt to me like he was going through the motions here. The rest of the acting is fine, the songs are decent and I do see at least some passion in making this film work as a musical; the cast certainly are giving it their all during the musical numbers with Herod's son's song about his inner conflict arguably being the best one in my opinion. I just don't have any strong opinions about this film whatsoever and while I got through it fine, it didn't have any remarkable staying power. Felt like the kind-of film I'd find on Disney Channel if that studio wasn't so afraid of dealing with religious sensibilities so much that they ended up downplaying that angle in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Some of the lighter songs did have a High School Musical-vibe to then. TL;DR A decent Christmas watch but hardly a masterpiece of Biblical cinema.

When Banderas surfaces, the movie becomes passable and worthwhile. Aside from his contributions this musical version of the 2000s' 'Nativity Story' lacks style and possible substance even with the source material's loftiness rife with artistic and philosophical opportunities. Plus, the songwriting is more reminiscent of Taylor Swift than Andrew Lloyd Weber.

Great music. Melodic and memorable with “We Can Be We” my cup of tea. I hope it gets more love from musical fans! Mary and Joseph casting couldn’t be more perfect! Even if you have internal conflict with religion, embrace this for the music and genre, as well as the actors. I’ve told people about this and many are like “oh the Mary and Joseph story”. Surprised by the lukewarm reaction from who I considered open-minded people. Yes it is faith-based and we should all embrace it. The heart of faith-based is to bring peace and hope, and this is what this film does for me. Beautiful art is beautiful and I hope people recognize Journey to Bethlehem as a great contribution to the musical genre.

I enjoyed it. And yet was a little disturbed it was a musical for some reason. Generally I like musicals. So not sure why this bothered me.
