Military Wives

It benefits hugely from the casting of the ever-delightful Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan - their chalk and cheese is a perfect combination that holds interest in material that might have got a bit humdrum and schmalzy.

It'll have you in your feelings, but this is still great entertainment that doesn't try to push too hard...

At a time when our world is drowning in uncertainty, Military Wives offers hope. It's the very definition of a feel-good movie.

Military Wives absolutely succeeds in what it sets out to do - which is, admittedly, not a particularly grand ambition, but that doesn't mean it's not a mark worth hitting.

The entire cast is aces, especially Thomas.

Kind of fun and touching without ever being all that interesting... It didn't do enough to really earn its laughs or its tears. I wish that it had a little more personality and pizazz to make up for it.

The relationships, though fun, come together exactly how you would expect. But what it lacks in originality it makes up for in heart.

Military Wives has no grand ambitions, but it’s exactly that quality that makes it work so well, perhaps especially for those people who go into it with their guards up.

Military Wives successfully deploys its (generally) Forces-brand of humour well, alongside knowing where and when to pack the emotional punch. And like the choirs it was inspired by, it's pretty uplifting stuff.

Military Wives is not an award-worthy movie, but it has a compelling story and actors who know how to hold the audience's attention. A final sing-along at the end credits only cements the power that music and community can provide for those in need.
