Mindcage

The actors all ham it up to a degree suited to a project so flat, cheap and derivative, which helps keep “Mindcage” at least watchable, if never exceptional.

Malkovich and Martin Lawrence aren't enough to elevate director Mauro Borrelli's throwback to 1990s serial killer films.

Forgettable thriller.

It's a familiar premise, but it ultimately takes a very different and far less entertaining turn.

We can admire and enjoy the fact that Mindcage winds up doing things we don’t anticipate, but the film might have been better served if it got more outrageous a little earlier.

Despite some top-notch scenery chewing by John Malkovich as a deranged serial killer, a series of preposterous final-act twists drains any remaining tension, credibility, and emotional investment.

Mindcage bundles tiresome serial killer clichés into a lackluster thriller with strained pacing. A capable cast of Hollywood veterans go through the motions with low energy. The second act feels like molasses dripping backwards.

A bit of nutso writing can’t save the viewing experience, which doesn’t come close to supplying a nail-biting hunt for an esoteric killer and his loquacious inspiration.

An anemic, forgettable crime thriller low on suspense, intrigue and atmosphere.
