What follows, as Mahendra pivots to coaching and nudges his wife towards the spotlight, is a small monument to partnership building.

Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is a marriage story in the cast of a sports film where the sport serves as a literal binding factor and a metaphor for partnership.



Sharma’s talent for staging emotional scenes carry Mr and Mrs Mahi over its post-interval bumps. Consistency, and emotional intelligence, are provided by a pitch-perfect Rajkummar Rao.

Despite its initial sweetness and interest in character psychology, Sharan Sharma’s Mr. & Mrs. Mahi is neither a convincing sports film nor an effective relationship drama.

Ultimately, the film beautifully depicts the idea that true victory lies in finding fulfillment within yourself, not in the eyes of others.

At least the film, like the real Mahi, took the game deep.
