My Spy

Both a little bit better than I expected and not quite good... Self-awareness doesn't make up for the fact that it's very predictable.

The movie's humor is broad and its twists are obvious, so much so that even a couple of enjoyable performances can't really elevate My Spy into anything unique.

The holes in this forgettable, borderline creepy film are as big as the canyon in Naperville.

Bautista commits to the dad jokes, and young Chloe Coleman holds her own, but both actors are ultimately wandering through the mists of a movie that isn't fully there.

"My Spy's" got the goods. Pinky promise.

One can't help but think the story would have worked so much better as a drama, or some kind of "Man on Fire" actioner, with Coleman's chops and Bautista's brooding presence.

The reason I'm not giving this one a positive grade is due to the lack of closure given to a significant issue regarding Chloe Coleman's character arc, which sends the wrong message to everyone (kids and parents) going through the same problem.

My Spy rides the coattails of its likable lead for sketch-like comedy that lacks any proper depth or complexity, but that’s certainly what may be needed right now.

It’s tempting to dismiss my own opinion by simply accepting that I’m not the target audience. Then again I’m not quite sure who the target audience is. The dead bodies and the smattering of crude dialogue are enough to muddle the lines.

My Spy doesn’t add anything new to the well established “big guy, little kid” formula, but it’s also pretty harmless as a whole.
