I really was into this movie and felt the actors did great and there's a good amount of emotional buildup - but the pacing was off. The beginning was so stretched out it lasted the entire movie which felt like just beating a dead horse after like the 5th vision she had - and then the end came at me so fast and like a bunch of huge things happened in 5 min. Disappointing cuz the beginning really had me going. Also SPOILER but I hate it when movies add sex scenes that sincerely aren't necessary. It really barely ever is necessary. It makes me feel like they don't really believe in the story they're trying to tell and they're just going for cheap excitement, but it's weird. Maybe just personal preference.

In a way, Nanny feels like Nikyatu Jusu getting as many of her ideas onto the screen as possible just in case she doesn't get another chance. It's visually haunting and striking, and worth a watch for that on its own. But it is also clunky in its delivery and doesn't have sharp enough teeth to sink into you before its gonzo third act. Anna Diop delivered a great performance, but the rest of this movie just didn't resonate with me. The whole thing was slow and it just got stupid with all these convoluted "visions" and dreams that made absolutely no sense to me whatsoever! And I think it's rather silly with all the scary visions and bizarre sea creatures we're seeing, the best title they could come up with is NANNY?! Really?? Weird.

Although I am a newcomer when it comes to criticizing a movie. I could not be more disappointed upon watching this movie. I have no right to say whether the actors played their part correctly, but seeing this movie with "horror" and "mystery" I was thrilled. Watching it made me realize the premise itself was no real mystery it was as straightforward as it can get. The "horror" aspect wasn't to my liking, a few jump scares here and there and ominous music but that's about it. They also gave us no deep connection with some of the characters. The son a vital character in the plot of the movie had very few shots of him more voice lines than anything making me have no sort of emotional connection to him throughout the film. The cinematography was great though I had a blast looking around in the background and seeing all sorts of stuff. overall I didn't enjoy this film it wasn't to my taste, but to everyone, their own don't treat my opinion as fact as you may enjoy it.

Looks nice but little to no plot. Not thrilling. I felt no emotion during it. It doesn't build up and the ending doesn't land.

A beautifully presented film, with a great performance from AD. I wouldn't say it's a horror per se… more a tragic drama with a mystic/fantasy element. I don't feel it tells the story I think it's trying to - that it's about loss, and the imagery and feelings that conjures, is apparent, but there is no real, tangible connection between the nightmarish scenarios Aisha experiences and said loss, until we are presented with the obvious truth towards the end of the film. And to say the ending is rushed and doesn't even try to explore the malevolence and magic of the entity/entities with regards her bearing another child, is an understatement, and feels like a huge missed opportunity to give the story more substance. The cinematography, as said, is beautiful, but the story seems woefully underdeveloped, so one does not support the other enough to hold the movie as a whole to the level it should have reached

This movie had so much potential. Beautiful visuals, intense build up and a great cast. The ending was a disappointment - left a lot of unanswered questions.

I was skeptical because of NANNY's user reviews but I should have seen it coming: This film is really good! Beautiful, moody, heartfelt, romantic, creepy, uncomfortable, and devastating. Jusu brings in a fresh perspective, deconstructing (or, truly, confirm the reality of) the American Dream, like it has been done by many (white/American/white immigrant) men before. The look on the patriarchy through the lens of a mother reminded me of ROSEMARY'S BABY (maybe because I've seen it just recently), but what Polanski (and all men) couldn't bring to his film is the emotional understanding of what it means actually being a mother (I'm a white male, too, so I'm not pretending to be an expert here). I quite liked the mirror motive and the - in my opinion - devastating meaning of water. I didn't get the full meaning of those Senegalese creatures, and I thought that Jusu crammed a bit much in her film, especially towards the last couple minutes. All that being said, NANNY is definitely worth a watch and you will think about it for quite some time. Most of the horror in this film comes from casual remarks by Aisha. Not quite a spooky Halloween film, yes, but an important, well constructed, and sometimes creepy shattering of hopes and dreams.

A movie that I liked less than I was interested in it. The usage of West African folklore was an intriguing touch that I'm sure most viewers (myself included) won't be familiar with. Is this horror? Not at all. But it's certainly a pretty good melancholic psychological drama with a TON of visual metaphor - for example, he theme of drowning is replayed over and over not only as a physical plot device, but also to parallel immigrant struggle and class inequity. The story and lead acting from Anna Diop is pretty fantastic, but the entire movie exists within a plane between fantasy and reality which is generally not my thing and certainly detracted a bit from the experience for me.

🍅 The detail in the characters and the story['s background] make for a well-crafted mystery to say the least. Though I feel it gets a bit too experimental and off the hinges in its last act. - give it a pass (fresh)
