Disappointing. Tom Hanks is a great actor but he couldn't save this one.

El viaje de Noticias del gran Mundo para algunas personas podrá ser lento y en muchos momentos muy aburrido, pero siento que, si conectas con la belleza visual y con él, aunque pausado pero hermoso desarrollo que tienen El Capitán Kidd y Johanna entre sí, definitivamente encontrarás el corazón detrás de la cinta. La película es muy contundente en su desarrollo, el cómo el Capitán Kidd llevará a Johanna con su familia en un viaje de semanas. Este personaje dejo todo por ayudar a Johanna que en principio podría ser el objetivo que la película necesita para avanzar con su narrativa, o hasta una excusa para llegar a su momento climático, pero nuevamente me parece que el accionar de este personaje es lo que hace relacionable esta aventura con el espectador, el cómo, aunque las circunstancias sean adversas el tener la necesidad de ayudar es lo que marca la diferencia, tanto en tu interior cómo para la otra persona, y eso es clave en esta historia. Ambos encuentran una motivación en su vida que al inicio del viaje era inexistente. Me gustó como de fondo en la cinta, se nota la llegada de la industrialización y el cómo la gente tenía miedo al cambio, el sentirse desprotegidos en un mundo que aparentemente cada vez parecía que les pertenecía menos. Una escena que para mí define este mensaje está cuando Johanna en la carreta cambia su nueva vestimenta por la antigua a pesar de la otra estar limpia, representando el cómo el constante cambio obliga a todos a adaptarse, aunque tengan que dejar de ser quiénes son y lo que los distinguía para de cierta manera pertenecer en la normativa social, aunque ellos se nieguen. Una vez ya emprendido el viaje poco a poco se va fortaleciendo el lazo que mantiene unidos a los protagonistas, el cómo a pesar de no hablar el mismo idioma los une lo que el otro ha sacrificado en este viaje para la supervivencia de ambos, cómo la escena en la que pelean contra los 3 "comerciantes", me encantó la construcción escénica porque se siente tangible la dificultad de la misma, siendo difícil para el protagonista vencer a los tres antagonistas, no son villanos de paso, representando un gran conflicto físico para el héroe acabar con ellos. dónde a pocos días de llegar a su destino sigue la misma interrogante de que pasará con ellos una vez haya terminado el trayecto; terminando este segundo acto con otra escena espectacular, la escena en la que el capitán Kidd cuenta una historia enfrente de un pueblo que sin saberlo estaban siendo reprimidos, la construcción nuevamente es espectacular, el cómo lentamente se va desenvolviendo el mensaje que la misma película planeta, pero ahora siendo citada por el protagonista, la importancia del libre albedrio y el cómo la manipulación mediática aunque sea en un periódico local crea una cortina de humo para tener a todos los habitantes "felices", sin opción a la contradicción por ser el lugar en el que viven todo lo que conocen. Explorando más el lado introspectivo de los personajes, y el cómo sin darse cuenta crearon una conexión que no se puede romper, aunque en primera instancia no lo haya notado el capitán Kidd, dejando a Johanna con sus tíos, que después de un viaje de semanas cada uno tendría que continuar con su camino en línea recta, siendo el mismo Capitán el que después de perder literalmente todo cuando se entera que su esposa murió en los 5 años que estuvo ausente decide regresar por Johanna que de la misma manera no se había podido adaptar a su nueva realidad, siendo los mismos tíos los que aprueban que ellos dos forjen un nuevo camino con ellos dos al frente, si un rumbo claro, dejándose llevar por el sentimiento de aventura, representando para mí él porque en primera instancia el Capitán se dedicaba a difundir noticias de pueblo en pueblo, siendo una incitación para sus oyentes el conocer más allá de lo establecido del lugar donde residen, el ver todas las realidades y cuestionarnos todo lo que nos rodea por la experiencia que otras personas han sufrido aunque no sepamos quienes son más por el nombre escrito en un pedazo de papel.

Dark, perceptively acted, intriguing Western. Tom Hanks is a natural for this role, and the young,I believe German, actress is astounding. Parts of this movie a really riveting.

The film is exceptional. Tom Hanks alone can sustain a film but the young actress Helena Zengel is hypnotic too. The cinematography reminds me of director Terrence Malick's stunning filming of vast landscapes. I notice some reviewers say the film is slow moving, but I can honestly say that I was gripped from the first moment to the end. My husband who usually prefers fast moving action films was totally engrossed by this beautiful film. All in all this was a refreshing change from the usual shallow blockbuster style movies all too common today. It conveyed its meaning and substance with gentle subtleness unlike some films where one feels as if the 'message' is being pushed down one's throat at every opportunity in case we 'miss it'. I really enjoyed this film.

Tom Hanks is no newbie to the Western genre, after being Woody the cowboy in the Toy Story series, but this is a very calm and humane tale based on Paulette Giles' 2016 novel by the same name, with the backdrop of the rugged, conflicted and still developing America of the 1870s. A man weathered by fighting in the civil war, and who now makes his living by reading the news of the world across the towns comes across a little girl on his ride, hiding beside a horse cart wreck. She's of German descent but only speaks Kiowa (Native American) and has had a painful saga to live through in the few years of her childhood. He takes her under his care and upon his own self to ensure she returns to her next of kin. There are some sprinkled moments of tension and conflict as they go along their long ride, but the magic of it all lies in the bonding that the old man has with his tiny and wild companion. It's an interesting and well directed take on the genre of outlaws and sprawling American plains from Paul Greengrass, who's more popularly known for a combination of drama and action with his fictional "Bourne" films and some fact based retelling like "Captain Philips", "United 93" and "Bloody Sunday". Tom Hanks is of course splendid in a character that carries depth and baggage, but rises through it all. Though the twelve year-old Helena Zengel is equally brilliant with her act as the wild, confused German-American kid brought up by the Natives. She already has won some deserving recognition with a Golden Globe nod. A slow burn that's totally worth the watch purely for Hanks and Zengel's moving acts.

There are some good performances here, but there really is nothing here to make it stand out from a story told many times before.

What an amazing story! What an amazing movie and I am not even American(although you don't need to be). Digging in the past and exposing the genocide of the Indian populations together with another magnificent performance from the great Tom Hanks and the much promising talent Helena Zengel. You cannot feel untouched by this. Humanises the story of every man who fought at any war and sacrificed their priceless goods of life, for what!? These are the movies which new generations should be put in front the TV and watch. Movies that shout-out the message of peace on earth. I personally give an 8.5/10 and wish that films like this will keep coming out.

Predictable but enjoyable story.

An excellent film from beginning to end. Strong performances by all, especially Tom Hanks, odd to see him in a western, and Helena Zengel, playing superbly a young girl orphaned twice, as they bond during their odyssey to return her to her only remaining family. Well worth the time.
